MODIFIED DASH
« on: Sep 21, 2009, 07:03PM »
Going for the upmost weight reduction possible so I have modified the dash by fabricating a new fibreglass dash/console on the passenger side and trimmed down the drivers side. Only half way through but thought i'd post a few pics of my progress so far. Don't have much experience with fibreglass but thought i'd have a go at it. Still got a few more sheets to lay and sanding/spraying but not too far off.

Scott, just a bit of constructive criticism.

Use the fibreglass as a mold for a carbon/kevlar version, you'll only need about 2 layers of 12oz 6x6 carbon cloth and 1 layer in the middle of kevlar cloth for it to be nice and light, and strong.

I seen a post from another persons build somewhere else using carbon but it didn't give any info regarding the process, is it relatively the same method as fibreglass? Very interested in going this way as it's going that one step further in weight loss. Might look into using carbon a bit more and use what I have done already for a template/mould as you said, only went with the fibreglass option as I had SOME experience with it already!

That's fair enough mate, maybe give the carbon version a go later on. have a look into vacuum bagging as well, that is one of the main ways to optimize the resin/fibre ratio to get a nice light weight part.

I've heard from alot of people without vacuum bagging, CF is a [i seem to suffer from tourettes] to lay. One friend has had first had experiance and said it's pretty hard.

I can't picture what it will look like in the end, but I don't think the standard dash was too bad to begin with.

to be fair, it wouldn't be ANTRX if we stayed on topic.
