7.5w30 oil in KA24DE
« on: May 7, 2009, 05:20PM »
Hey all.

I've had my U13 for 10,000km now and I'm going to give it a service.  It has 120,000km on the dial and has ALWAYS been serviced at nissan dealerships.  I decided that I wanted to ensure I used the same oil as they would have used, the same oil the engine has been running on for the last 120,000km.

After calling nissan spare parts I was told that the oil they use in alot of nissan's manufactured around the N14/15/U13 time is a special 7.5w30 weight oil.  $40 for a 5 litre container, which is not shocking I guess, but not cheap either!

Have any other KA24DE U13 owners done the same and bought this oil from Nissan?

I know it sounds really anal, but the car has run like clockwork and I want it to stay that way.

sounds a bit thin ryan, considering that it has done a few klms, also consider the driving habits of the previous owner as well, church on Sunday, market on tuesday, pension day thursday, maybe never saw much over 4 grand on the tacho, compare that to your less than sedate driving habits, and i would consider something a bit thicker.

maybe 15w40 also call back and find out if it is synthetic or mineral because as you know its not good to change over completely, and the other way, best to stick with whats been it it as they dont mix so well as one will break the other down some what, see if it is a friction modified or not as well, sometime its not so good to buy the most expensive oil as they arnt always compatible , with the clearances in your engine and the type of materials in in the bearings and so on. i would be more concerned with the specific properties of the oil as mentioned then buy a slightly thicker for age and then quality oil $40 for peace of mind is not bad, compared to Motul turbo light at $57 for 5 litres,

Use any 15w Ryan.

The SAE chart in the U13 factory brochure tells me to use a 5w30 --> 10w30 for summer.

I have a 10w40 that's 'synthetically enhanced' but I don't want to use that as i'm certain the car has always had a mineral oil in it.

I'm still leaning towards what nissan say would have been used by all its dealership service departments, and what they recommend, the 7.5w30.

I do value your opinions though guys, which is why i've asked!

I agree with laurence and chris. 7.5w30 just sounds too thin for my liking. Just keep in mind that those recommendations are for a brand new engine as well budge (as i'm sure you know). I guess with winter on our door step you could get away with a 10w - if it were me i'd go for a 15w as chris suggested, something like Penrite HPR15 or castrol modern eng.

Do nissan offer a slightly thicker oil? or any additives to thicken up the 7.5w30? Surely if they were presented with a 250,000km N15 they wouldn't just bung in the 7.5w30!

If you work at supercheap, I see why you do. Most people walk in there and buy bullshit/whatever the sales staff recommend.

Make sure you consider the context before you say 15w is the most common, nowdays I would say 10w is more common. Although you get the old pigs who eat 20w happily and the performance who dont like anything thicker than 5w.

As far as branding goes, I will be using Nulon in my engines and builds. Supporting Australia too.

as you know from my experience & our short discussion about oil anything below 15w is a bit thin for the DE, my smoky idle went away when i changed to 20w-50

but as a general reference (from the u13 altima fwm)..
5w30 is for ambient air temps below -30*C
20w40/50 are suitable for ambient temps above 10*C for all seasons

i've found 20W-50 to be spot on for my DE, runs normal temp & i return 550km to a tank (pretty good i recon for a turbo'd DE)

or, just do thicker oil in summer & thinner oil in winter
NO! it's NOT a fucking SR20!!

You're running 20w in a rebuilt motor with tight ring seals?

Holy shit. I ran 0w in the KA and I had no smoke at all. But 0w is stupidly thin so I switched to 5w30.

ye only coz of the stupid sticky pcv valve

I do like the 15 weight in my U13 very quiet and smooth running except for the first half second on a ice-cold start where this is an ever so slight top end rattle for a split second.
