well what ya putting in? 6x9" or 6"/6.5"? if your putting in anything bigger than 6" which is the stock size i think? then the shelf would be good because you can make it all sit flush. but yeah tech article on how to do it is here------>http://www.antrx.com/tech/article.php?t=4440&a=noss&v=t

the shelf will definately sound better as the bass will have a larger area to resonate throughas compared to a spacer sitting on your stock shelf

I don't really understand that, but ohwell.

I did spacers, probably because I was lazy. The first ones I did were shithouse but I made new ones awhile ago and they held my 6x9s down fkn tight (So much so, the dumb fucks who broke into my car the other night couldn't get them out) and they sounded good, the speakers are quite bassy and I had no rattles or anything. Carpeted them in the same carpet (Got some from wreckers) and they looked pretty good.

i went with the whole shelf option when doing my corsair back shelf and it worked a treat. you get a nice, clean sound and if you use some black car carpet it makes it look nice. but then again if you did a proper job with spacers like rake has it'd probly work just aswell. depends how much time/effort you want to put into the car i guess  :-\

sound quality doesnt differ much (if both done properly)... a new shelf just looks more neat, especially when carpeted
I'm sick of my knob going all floppy and loose in my hand  :P

you will notice a difference with a new shelf, less vibrations

I had no vibrations with spacers. Hell, theres really nothing that can vibrate and rattle around. The shelf itself is just a thin piece of cardboardy wood stuff, carpet and foam.

SSStick, im not sure how your spacers were put in... but Rake's spacers were bolted straight through to the metal tray underneath the thin cardboard piece...

Yep. I drilled 3 holes for the bolts to fit through, on flat parts of metal around the stock speaker hole (Where the speaker magnet will sit). I couldn't do a 4th in the back corner cloest to either side of the car, because there was nowhere flat underneath it to secure it. But even then, the speakers did not budge at all, the hole in the riser fit very snug around the speaker so they could be screwed in properly. I could crank them pretty high and they'd have no problem making things vibrate with the bass they put out.

Each bolt had 2 nuts put on it to ensure everything would stay on. As said, even thieves swiftly gave up on them, and they were reckless (breaking my dash and door).

I have a chip board rear parcel shelf in my R31 Pintara, along with MDF spacers. I have no idea if it sounds crap because of the chipboard, since I am just running some POS 6 1/2" 3 way things in the holes, as 'subs' off the head unit. But it definitely resonates a lot which would be annoying if I was after any kind of 'crisp' bass.

I was amazed at how little room there actually is to put a speaker in. I put in 19mm chip board and 16mm spacers, along with the 5mm or so of space you get between the metal and chipboard. So hopefully I can stick anything in there now.

I think the best thing about making an entire new rear parcel shelf is that you can make screw holes for putting in either a 6 1/2" spacer, or 6x9" spacer.
