New to Forum and just bought a Ford Corsair.
« on: Jan 5, 2009, 11:45AM »
Hi All,
Recently I retired my car, a Holden.
Two weeks ago I began my search for a replacement vehicle. I browsed Used Car Yards and visited about 20 cars from the classifieds etc. Yet could not find anything that felt right. I wanted a car with character; something that suited me.
Then three days ago, I happened upon a 1990 Ford Corsair, a car I had never heard of before.
It had bits missing inside, no stereo, no a/c, bad and missing window seals. Yet I felt compelled to take it for a test drive... And was hooked. Bought it for $2600AU then and there.

Advertised as a Corsair GL but possibly a Ghia, as it has the 2.4 ltr and Power Steering/Windows, central locking.
Fat Exhaust sounds great, and a Pod Filter.

No Log Books etc. only the keys, the car dealer could not tell me anything more about it.

Only picked it up today, so I am looking forward to giving it a good clean, and getting to know it better.

First Question: How can I confirm whether it is a GL or Ghia? As previous owner possibly put in the 2.4 and electrics (No Badges).

2.4 is a Ghia. There is a Chassis code in the Vin number, but I'm not too sure about what it is.

Somewhere on the site for download is the Full Service Manual from Ford for the UA corsair. It's a 25 meg download. That will answer any questions you have.

Found it!
I'm so far behind at work, I'm almost retro!

No A/C?

Just missing the interior butons, or missing the actual AC radiator, etc etc

Thank you for the fsm link Wombat.
Budgie, I'll get back to you after following the manual to confirm status of A/C et all.

Model Code from my car is: 23953 FP
The manual was produced prior to release of Liftback, so all I have is:

I'm guessing that the liftback code is 2395 (as sedan is 239) and perhaps the 3 signifies Ghia.

Just missing the interior butons, or missing the actual AC radiator, etc etc.
No Button, No Cooling Unit, No Radiator etc. Is it costly to have an AC System installed?

On a side note, the car is developing a continuous grinding noise whilst travelling; subtle when in Neutral, but a little louder when in gear.
Clutch system? costly repairs.
(As I have only owned the car a day) I'm getting a little worried that I might have just bought a lemon  :'(

Update: Took the car to a mechanic... sounds like Gearbox issues, possible Thrust/Side Bearings on the way out. They say that dealers have ways to cover up this noise/issue, and as the noise just started a day later, they would not be suprised to find banana peel/sawdust etc. inside.

can you pull them up for that? i remember someone else here was sold a car and discovered months later that things were missing and they ended up having the car dealer pay for everything that needed doing.

welcome to the site though mate, shame that the car dealer shafted you though. once you get the issue sorted out i'm sure you'll love the car.
