U12 members spring,strut/suspension setups.
« on: Feb 20, 2012, 10:25AM »
Hey guys, let's see if we can find the best possible setup for our rides, what's everyone running on their u12s ?

For example, I'm running:
Stock struts and springs
Full whiteline bushings front and rear
24mm front whiteline sway
20mm rear whiteline sway.

Now, I'm just curious of options.
What's a good strut and springcombo ? Fuck that king spring shit off.
I'm going to go with lovells superlows, but no idea of struts to go with them, they don't make aftermarket shortened struts.

Now, a lower car has a lower centre of gravity causing less body roll ? Am I right ?
Also, I don't have an LCA brace as I sold mine to Matt, also, no strut braces.

So what's everyone else running or recommends ?

lol... no need to rush.  I suppose you'll only make about 5 sets, and some guy from the states will make something similar at $20 cheaper but dissapear once he gets money  :P
but seriously, good stuff Adam, would be nice to have that option for the serious driver.

I've got king springs.  Can't see what the negativity is about there?  They do the job are cheap and easy to fit, no different to lovells really just yellow v blue.
Combine that with some swaybars like you have on your list and you'll be sweet.
Biggest thing I noticed was changing the wheels/tyres.  You dont realise how much of the little bumps a deep tyre takes out, likewise the difference in corners is clear too.

What's wrong with king springs ? I just don't trust shit that is pumped out of the factory like sausages, normally it means that quantity exceeds quality. Lovells may be stiffer also, but I'm not sure. What strut combo would be good ? Pedders are a 20% mark up on performance from oem replacements such as Monroe,

in my opinion, for the average street user that wants a nice mix between handling and comfort, you can't go past munroe gas/sens-a-trac and king springs. ultra low at the front, super low at the rear.

best handling upgrade i ever did was the whiteline swaybars.

I want slight bit more suspension rather than comfort, I have the whitelines on and installed the front chasis brace with whiteline bushes.

what car do the front ultra lows come from ? I know the n14 rear superlows fit our rear....

I have access to S13 stuff through a friend / ex-work colleague that owns/runs Shockworks. The rears are my focus at the moment; the conversion kit hopefully will be a few simple mods to the rear hub (cut the tube off housing the rear shock, drill a couple of holes, bolt on a U shaped bracket) and bolt up the rear coilover assembly.

The kit won't be expensive (at a guess, < $100), his Neotech coilovers for S13's are about $1150 from memory.

So ive done the research for superlows.
According to King part numbers in cheezels thread

Front Superlows - KDFL-01 which are Nissan NX coupe lows.
They also make superlows, so would that make it ultralows for us ?
Rear Superlows - KDRL-50Sl which are Nissan Pulsar N14s superlows.

Lovells spring part numbers for these springs are:

Front - CFS-13 (nx coupe lows)
           CFL-13 (nx coupe superlows)
Rear - DRL-51 SL (N14 Pulsar superlows)

just for anyone who wants superlows.

Superlows for our cars stangley enough are "Nissan Nx Coupe 30mm Lows"
Nx coupe front and rear lows are superlows for the u12/ua.

Its amazing what you find when you match part numbers, I wander if struts would fit......

Dude, standard lows are superlows for us, they also make superlows so in theory that should be ultra lows for us.

They don't make super lows for anything in Nissan.

I think it was the standard lows for the capri turbo - KFFL-15?

They dont mate up 100% - no access to rear camber tops once the coil is in, and i believe a bolthole needed widening?

The front faired a bit better though. Cant remember what exactly.

Keeping this open as its informative.

I don't know much about understeer/oversteer etc I just know more braces with bigger bars are better when balanced.

How would it pan out using a front 27mm sway with a 20mm rear sway and rear strut brace ? Dropped on superlows and good struts ? I know if you have the front end too stiff it will cause understeer ? Will the rear strut brace make up for the extra large front sway ?

Quote from rake
"So, the good news? Front U13 suspension (and concequesntly coilovers etc) are a straight proven boltup. Maybe a little bit shorter (no more than an inch I'd guess) but no big since lowering anyway.

The bad news? Rears are COMPLETELY different. No hope in hell of U13 gear fitting a U12 here, unless it's an Attesa. Dam you nissan for going this whole integrated hub/spindle/inser tube wtf bullshit design. Seriously, what.

I wonder how the AUDM / U13 FWD rear crossmember/subframe thingi compares to that of an Attesa? It looks like it'd accomodate a diff and driveshafts.

Hmm.."

only front coilovers will fit with no modding necessary providing its the FWD setup.

So im guessing, front u13 FWD coilovers with rear shortened stuts and superlows are the way to go....

gonig on this from Vithy

"U13 coilovers do fit! But as the distance between the 3 bolts on the top of the upright are not all equal length ( 2 are 10cm, 1 is 11cm or something like that) the camber tops cant be installed in the correct way with out the tower tops being redrilled. Which is not really an issue the coilover still functions and mounts in 100%. And as there are camber bolts in the bottom from factory anyways u can still achieve useable amounts of camber anyways. You just need to make sure the blokes that do ur wheel alignment have an idea of what they are actually doing otherwise if they try and adjust the camber using the camber tops u end up wid a shit load of castor and lots of setting changes u were properly not after."

No I didn't and all the places I emailed who sell various brands Ksport, D2, Tien, Megan and DGR all said that you can only buy them in sets of four...

Anyone keen on buying some rear u13 coilovers ? Will fit u12 with minimal modification. I'm eager to know seeing as I have cash to place the order now and don't want to be left with 2 spare coilovers..

Edit: we could also do u13 front strut of any preference with cold wound coilover sleeve kits...
Seeing as the front struts fit the u12 and the rear u12 strut uses the same spring as the back of the u13. Will fit with no modification...

Anything happened with this?

Such a shame, only 10 people need to put up a grand or so and it's so hard to get going. Hell, only 4 people could put up $150 for a strut brace...

Guys, my finances permitting, I will have a relatively U12 friendly bolt in adjustable coilover setup from Shocksworks. It will be mainly S13 based, but the top hats i will be getting specific to the U12.

There is modification required to the rear hubs, to convert the tube-to-spindle mount to an S13 bush mount.

^ that's a good idea.

On another note, I installed the coilover sleeve kit in the rear on the u12, even though they are meant for a u13 with a proper strut setup, installed on the [language filter smackdown]got shock/hub design, at it's lowest point the rear guards are just in line with your rear tyres, still low, practical and legal. So far in just installing the rear, I had noticed alot let body roll and a significant increase in handling.

Also to add to this I had picked up a set of non adjustible camber tops for the front, sick of the stock rubber ones splitting, they should add a bit more stiff. They will be installed when I can be fucked installing the front sleeve kit.

The sleeve kit was only $80 with $128 postage from the U.S and to me they look like a universal bolt on kit for alot of cars, I'm also 99% positive they will also fit the front u12 struts, as I run a set of u13 tokicos.

DIG.

Got a set of kido racing street/track spec coilovers or a u13 Altima, bolts straight into the u12.

Benefits:
Height adjustible to the point of dropping your car on its tires.
Damper adjustible to make hard or soft
Bottom bracket adjustible so you can correct control arm geometry
Camber adjustible.
Double locking spring perches
Pillow ball top mounts
7kg springs.

Fucking amazing.

Ah yes, stupid different rear end setup in FWD U12's.

U13's are the same AWD and FWD which makes much more sense!

I have the left on the left and right on the right UNLESS, because the bottom mounting bracket is adjustible and screws on and off that perhaps they were simply put on the wrong sides, I will swap them over tomorrow and check, hopefully it solves the issue ^_^

pedro, if my rear adaptors work out ok, we'll be able to use S14 front / rear coilovers.

FIXED IT, wa exactly as I thought, bottom mounting brackets were on the wrong sides. I moves them up alot more, made the car lower and gave it more strut travel, it's awesome.

Given that is it 2WD, our kit for the U13 will work with your setup. The 4wd is a different setup. Luckily these vehicles shared common suspension.

U13 rear coilovers do fit the rear bolt pattern but how will they join to the strut/hub combination ?

Forgot to mention,

The coilovers I got, the camber tops don't go dead straight up and down. But it's slightly off facing the front of the car, so if I was to adjust my camber backwards (strut top facing further in towards the bay) it will also very slightly adjust my caster (going to the front of the car)

Should not matter as a little more caster is a good thing, but providing I don't adjust my camber too far I should be fine ? ATM I have it set dead smack in the centre of the camber top.

Thanks Pure_Sincerity. Interesting info.

I need to redo my springs. I haven't measured the coils but my car sits roughly 40mm from the ground at rear and 70mm at the front. I'm guessing I have 'superlow' style springs at rear and 'low' style springs at the front. I want the car lowered but the harsh ride with the 18 inch wheels aint that pleasant. A good spring and legal height but not extremely stiff. As I have nolathane bushes now in the front as well as back and soon to get bigger sway bars I have to compromise for a more liveable ride.

Is the S14 & S15 swaybars a direct fit or will they need modifying. I'm guessing modifying somewhat?

They would be a direct fit, will just need bushes to match. I found this out because I read on the the s chassis forum that people were using j30 front swaybars as a simple up grade because they are 30mm opposed to 26mm (I think) and j30 front swaybars bolt onto the u12 also which would mean s14/15s would fit ours wether stock or after market. Than I looked at my brothers stock s15 sway bar and its almost exactly the same as our u12, will bolt up no dramas.
