Title: Hello from Canada
Post by: kat_u13 on Aug 12, 2010, 08:18AM
Hey all.

My Name is Billy and I'm a proud owner of a 1995 Nissan altima with a ka24de. Over the past 10 years I've been working on the car, slowly developing it and I'd like to share that with you.

My blog is: awdu13 dot wordpress dot com

The plans are to develop the car with the ka24de, turbo, and awd. The turbo setup has already been complete, and now I am working on a full engine build as well as planning for the awd setup. I hope I can contribute to this forum.

Thanks

- Billy

Welcome mate!

AWD in Canada would be a must yes? :)

If only lol Being that I reside in Toronto and global warming is just around the bend, temperatures are rising considerably.

This site was very useful to me when i was referred here several years ago. Threads about the u12 and u13 transfer case's was very influential to the project.

I will be utilizing a GTIR transfer case, GTIR PPG synchromesh, PPG final drive, Nissan Axxess Bell housing, S14 R200 rear differential, custom rear subframe, and Haltech engine management. All the engine work is being done slowly, as to learn all elements of the engine building process.

I'm also a big fan of composites, so I'll be looking to re-do a considerable amount of the chassis with a vacuum bagging, wet carbon/kevlar application.

Sounds excellent mate. I don't know of any other AWD KA24DE(T) anywhere, you may be the first?

Man big project!!!  My wife is from Toronto area (Ajax/Pickering) so I head over your side of the world a bit.  Would love to hear how you go with this.  Keep us posted with pics on how the AWD fits together with the DE.

The next update will be at the end of the month, when I go on a trip down to the United States to pick up the nissan axxess transmission and bell housing.

As far as I know, I am the only person that is attempting this frankenstein.

Hey all
So I got a fully counterweighted crankshaft and I knife edged it. No one can say that the KA can't be the proper bigger brother to the SR.

Picked up a R'nessa valve cover too!!

more updates on the blog

I drove 14 hours to pick mine up lol 7 there, 7 back. From Toronto, down to Pennsylvania, USA

www.car-part.com

I believe there is one on the East coast of Canada. You're looking at about 250 Canadian and I don't really know about shipping. You'll have to give them a ring for pricing as I may be wrong

In the US, there are more options.

nice build & blog. just so you know once you hit 5 or 10 posts (cant remember which) you can post urls. we were just having a lot of trouble with spammers the last few months.

good luck with it and keep the updates coming.

Fuck yeah, nice blog dude!

I'd like to see your results with knive-edging - although somewhat hard to actually test, I personally find they don't do anything. Windage/scrapers do a better job. But everybody has an opinion.

Re your article on reading plugs, since it seems like you're doing your own engine dev and tuning, you might want to do a write up on reading the plugs in a a frozen scenario - ie do a power run on the dyno and turn the car off at high rpm full load/partial throttle mid rpm/etc. Reading the heat strap will give you a much better understanding of timing and where you are in regards to MBT. The reading plugs you have there is somewhat basic but good for some people to know, i mean if the plugs ever look like that you have some serious problems heh

Keep the updates coming !

That's a really good way to keep the website safe. If I had read the site announcements I would have known that. My Bad.

I'm going to try to keep updates going from Monday throughout Friday. I must admit though that sometimes, I don't have anything to update, so I will have some filler. As of now, I probably have enough material to stretch into the Spring Months.

Thanks for subscribing all. Feel free to comment too, i'm not always correct on the things that i'm preaching.

Cheers

Let me know how it goes. When I first dealt with them they gave me a good deal. After talking to them it seemed like their pricing was adjusted but you may have better luck. The guys in the USA are used to shipping larger items such as trannys and bell housings iirc.

Things have been going slowly of late.

I need to send the engine block back.

I will be getting the engine align honed, so that I can torque down my APR main studs tighter. I'll also be o-ringing the short block. The Head studs I have are from a L19 saturn. I purchased them before the kit for the ka24de came out and the ka specific kit has stronger hardware. I don't plan on pushing past 500 or 600 because the power isn't useful anymore. Hopefully I won't blow the headgasket right off.

I move into my new house in about a week. I'll finally have the space to tear down my axxess transmission and catalogue all the components. This doesn't mean I'll have a lot of time though so I'll try to update as much as possible.

Cheers
- Billy

i don't envy you having to route that oil return line. quite tight in the engine bay there!

I spent all of today trying to setup my alternator and belt setup.
I gut my power steering pump to try to use it as a pulley considering how i'm going electric power steering...

sigh...
Didn't work.
Wasted most of today but I got the oil drain line finished to keep me motivated.

No, but I have some of a U12 AWD tank somewhere.

Why mate?
Title: Re: Hello from Canada
Post by: kat_u13 on May 17, 2012, 11:34PM
instead of running a fuel cell in the back trunk, it would be nice to run the tank in the middle of the car.

wanted images to see what kind of body work needs to be done, if any

Lgee may have some shots of his car on a hoist if it helps? U13 AWD.

So your wanting to fit a factory AWD tank into the FWD body if you can wrangle one?
Title: Re: Hello from Canada
Post by: kat_u13 on May 18, 2012, 12:10AM
yeah. there are u12's here that are awd so i might get lucky for replacement tanks

the only downfall is that i can't run a swirl pot and foam in an oem tank

the car is in multiple colours at the moment due to primer, carbon fiber, and the original body color.

That is going to change

It is a matte silver vinyl wrap. First go. 3m scotchprint.

what do you think? does it look too much like primer?
