Ordered D2 Coilovers
« on: Mar 16, 2006, 07:11PM »
Hey Guys I ordered some D2 Coilovers for my U13 today, should be getting them in a few days. I got them on special for $1500 so I'm pritty happy with that, not 2 expensive. I'm going to get the whiteline handeling kit and iv also contacted whiteline about getting a strut brace. I know they make them for the attessa but I think they will have to make one up for the Aus spec, anyway ill let u guys know how it goes and take some photos an tell you what I think of the handeling.

Then ill be buying Rims in about a month. Hehe I love my new job :)

you are gonna love them....there is a slight issue about noise but our members have the solution.

the thread might say K-Sport but not to worry it is the same suspension sold under a different company.

professionally installed is always a good bet, expecially if you don't have access to air-tools

i was gonna get the D2s (took measurements and all to ensure the FWD designed D2s would fit AWD, and seemed to match up) but decided not to. i found a lot of info about issues and the shocks not lasting long, but one of the biggest things was them not coming with the spring rates i wanted (and with lower spring rates like i wanted there would be no warranty).

so i'm spending similar money on a more traditional setup

either way though you could definately do it yourself, but you'll certainly also need a wheel alignment afterwards (use a good place that can set camber and toe exactly how you want it). they come with the spring over the coil already, so you don't actually need any spring compressors or anything - you could do it with a good jack, some stands, wheel brace, 17mm spanner (strut base), 17mm socket (strut base), 14mm socket, (strut top) 10mm socket (abs line) and whatever size spanner+socket for rear sway bar - so nothing spectacular needed, but you may come across some stubborn bolts.

what is this part: SPF1135-28K ?

anyway the install of all those parts could be done at home in a day, but if you wanna get it all installed i'd just guestimate based on your mechanics hourly rate for a few hours i guess. probably best to pull the rear seats out yourself first at a minimum (save him doing it to get to the top of the rear strut towers and getting grease all over them). i'd also do the rear swaybar yourself if you have spanners and a socket set, and the strut tower brace too - certainly don't need to be a scientist to do those (i did my rear bar lying under the car on the grass, car not raised at all in about 15-30 minutes). may as well get the cost down a bit.

put the rear swaybar on the softer setting to start with, i really don't think it'll be doing much with coilovers fitted. i've angled grinded the softest setting on my adjustable rear bar off because i didn't use it and it caused some issues.

I beleve the SPF1135-28k is a D bush mount kit for the front of the car.

I know the strut brace and sway bar would be fairly easy to do and no doubt I have the tools to do. Its just finding the time to do it, I thought my aswell get mechanic to do the sway bar while hes under the car anyway. I'll proberly do the strut brace seeing I don't have to bother getting under the car to do that. Plus being at mechanic he can do wheel alignment at same time.

I'll deffinatly take the rear seat and parcel tray out myself as my coustom parcel tray is a bitch to get in and out and I don't want a mechanic touching it and stuffing up my speakers, seat, parcel tray etc.

What was the issues with the soft setting?

Anyway after all this is done my car will be "Toight Like a Tiger" and will have a better stance 2.

Hey there,

I can tell you now that the strut brace will not fit your U13 it is designed for the ATESSA as the bar hits the AACV I know as I modified it myself.  I have had the D2's in my U13 for a while and am really impressed.  I have the camber tops front and rear,  strut brace,  front and rear swaybar,  castor bushes,  heavy duty swaybar links.  I am running 1.25 degrees negative in the front and 1.75 degrees negative in the rear,  handles real well.  I am running on 18x8's with 235/40's  and ny only complaint is that it is a harsh ride for daily use.  Also be careful as your car will be alot stiffer and will put a lot more stress on the chassis,  I found this out as I started getting cracks so I had the whole chassis braced and strengthed cost a fair bit just something to look out for.

if you can't modify or get a refund, let me know. i wouldn't mind the strut brace, and would buy off you.

i got the whiteline front springs on last night, will do rears some time tomorrow. man what a different, barely lowers the car, ride is like standard, but zero body roll. no complaints at all, other than i hate changing springs, what a crap job.

Ill let you know how it goes, I hope it fits I can't be botherd stuffing around with it.

Iv decided to install everything including the coilovers, but ill get a mechanic to adjust the coilover settings when done.

Does anyone know where I can find a writeup on installing D2's, The thing I'm not sure about is how tight the spring perches have to be on the spring. does anyone know? (not sure if thats the right name) {the little rings that the springs sit on that can be moved up or down by spinning around}

My dads gonna help me with all this, he has done plenty of work on cars to know what hes doing with installation, not like its that hard any way its just removing a few bolts taking out the existing struts and springs, and then putting in the coilovers and bolting up.

Fine tuning can be done by a suspension specialist.

Ill take some pictures when I do it for everyone to see. Id do it tomorrow but i think its better to wait for my whiteline parts to arrive and do everything at the same time.

I found this out as I started getting cracks so I had the whole chassis braced and strengthened cost a fair bit just something to look out for.

If you don't mind could you tell me where did it crack and how much did getting it fixed cost?

Edit...

I just noticed something.

http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=7372.60

Benny G's strutbrace is a whiteline and he said they had alredy modifyed ti to fit the Au bluebird. If this is so mostlikely mine will fit as I told them mine way a Aus spec.

Horray for me....Keeps fingers crossed.

Yeah this is my misses logon,

If you need any help or advice let me know,  I installed everything myself.  Let me know.  The chassis started getting cracks around the bolt holes where the rear mounts are for the swaybar.  I had them welded up and the whole chassis strengthed and braced.

Got my Whiteline Stuff in Yesterday, Strut Brace fits without modification!!!

I'm going to install everything tomorrow, but before I do that I'm going to buy a set of stands and a trolly jack, make my job easier. Ill also rent a torque wrench.

Ill take photos of the install and do a bit of a writeup so everyone can see whats been done. After I install everything I'm going to take it to a suspension specialist to set up the finer details.

Installed my coil overs on Saturday and had the 1st drive last night because I had to reset the front height and refill the gearbox as I accidently poped the axel out when installing the coilovers, everything went fairly smoothly with a few problems, Theres still things I have to work out like getting a new bolt for the rear sway bar because I stuffed the thread, but thats minor, The whiteline strut brace fits but sometimes rattles against the AAC valve, but I can fix this and will prob tonight, should take 15 mins max.

Only other thing was I had the same problem with getting the wrong bush as someone else in this forums did I cant remember who but I got 28mm bushes for front instead of 22mm bushes. The product code for future reference is SPF1135-28k for the wrong 28mm buses and SPF1135-22k for the right bushes. Anyway ill send this back to whiteline to be replaced. I haven't installed any of the front bushes I'm waiting to do all at once.

Anyway I took it out for a drive and what can I say but wow what a difference. Ride is a little bumpy, really more bouncy thats prob because my standard rim size and crappy tyres with low profiles its gonna hurt hehe. Cornering is totally great I can take them so much faster but the car feels so different the ass tends to feel like its going to slide out.

Its low but wheels dont scrub, which I'm happy about and because u13's bumpers don't hang really low speed humps are not a problem even with 4 people in the car. Taking corners at normal speeds the car holds so tight not even the slightest hint of body roll, feels like its on rails.

The wheel alignment is pretty bad now obviously because its been dropped, but ill get this fixed on Saturday. All I can say is I cant wait till i get some new rims, good rubber and install those front bushes.

Ill be making a write up on how to install and what not to do, from my few mistakes. All in all its not a hard job as long as you have a torque wrench, some sockets, jack and some stands.

Off the top of my head I couldn't tell you. But I didnt lower it too much, just enough to give it a good center of gravity without making it too low.

Its about 10-15mm from the top of the tyre to the guard.

how does the D2's compare to the whiteline suspension/springs???
