Title: Transfer Case - Questions
Post by: awd2.0t on Jun 25, 2010, 12:06AM
Not sure the best place to post this so have kept it to the Import section.

On a HNU13 do the Transfer cases normally fail in any particular way?  Or do they just get noisey if they're warn out?

What happens if you continue to run the car if the transfer case is knackered?

Estimated cost to re-condition?

can it be replaced without having to take out the engine & gearbox etc?

Cheers

yeah it can be replaced without removing the gearbox.

They generally don't fail as all they do is spin in one set position, all day every day.

Do you suspect yours is knackered?

Not knowing a lot about them but I would suggest if it's noisy then it would be bearings.

if they run low on oil it will make the bearings noisy, they a oiled by the same part that does the front diff which hangs off the side, a gtir one should fit but put back your bluebird front diff as the it is different, they do come up and are not overly dear. compared to a complete box.

Also, could just as easily be the gearbox that is noisy, how do they know it's the transfer case?

Yeah it is the white car, he also had a rather nice spare bumper that would have looked good on my car.  Would you know anything about that Budgie?

I was told that they put a scope on the car and narrowed it down to the transfer case, so just have to go on his word
