v8 commy cats
« on: Nov 7, 2003, 01:14PM »
does anyone know how big the v8 cats are on older commodores (vn/p). even the v6 cats maybe. i've got a 2" cat back and just thought that if they are 2" then this would be a shit load cheaper than a high flow cat

yeah, my brother is taking the dunnydore cat option with his celica on his 2.25" system.
I think the V6 cats are bigger due to the fact that it is the only cat in the exhaust system, where i think the V8 uses 2 smaller ones. I'll find out from my mate who owns a VN SS.

The cats on a TH-TJ Magna are failry big, as these cars all come from the factory with a 2.5 mandrel bent exhaust as standard.  Not sure of cost in relation to a Commo one though.

Homer!  What have you done to the car?  I don't think it had broken axles before.

Before!  Before!  You're living in the past, Marge.  Quit living in the past.

What, I never said I didn't like it asshat! :P

At least I don't think I did... but if I did, then I'm the asshat.

arr ok, yeh i reckon a vn cat would be cheaper and easier to find due to how common the cars are

VN V6 and V8 models came with identical 2.5" internal diameter cats as stock (well, actually a tiny tiny bit under 2.5). This bolted into the stock 2.25" (from cat-back) exhaust system...

IRS V8 VNs came stock with TWO mufflers instead of just one (single 2.25" Y into dual mufflers, then another Y into single 2.25"), and a single-inlet DUAL-2.25" OUTLET rear resonator.

HSV VNs came stock with dual/twin cats, but no non-HSV came stock with twin.

VN V6 throttle body is 60mm internal diameter stock, and the V8 VN one is 64/65mm stock. The V8 one *can* be used as a direct swap into a VN V6, after all the sensors from the V6 one are installed into the V8 one. But there's no advantage unless the engine will actually be sucking in that much more air that the throttle-body is limiting.

a bloke from commodore club gave me all that info, so looks like no model had a 2" cat...  :(

you could always have it modified down to 2" but probably not worth your while

yeh probably wouldnt be worth it, i'm sure some cars have 2" cats anyway. just requires a bit more research.
