How do people make it into motoracing ?
« on: Sep 11, 2006, 07:54PM »
How the hell do they get there...

like getting a spot in uni, there is basically a general set procedure, finish yr12, match the uai and wait.

What is there for racing ? Such as touring cars/v8 super cars, F1 is way too high to aim.

a lot of people start off when they're kids in go karts.. they then make their way thru the ranks in thinks like formula fords and what not.. but one way to get into it now if you're in australia is the aussie touring cars (the little minature things) apparently they're only $50k for a car and cheap to run.. you just have to be able to drive well enough and someone might offer you a spot in the v8's.

hmm...

How much do the v8 supercar company's spend to keep their business going, surely they have sponsorship help, but it's always been a nice thing to own a motorsport company.. maybe antrx can make one with everyone's help haha :P.

All you need is money. Thats it. And a lot of it.

You need a licence (Racing licence), A car, Misc equipment and replacement parts (wheels, brakes, engines etc) and a good driver. You can then enter any amature race, build up your ranks, and once you get sponsorship, go pro.

But mainly, money.

At least, thats what i know....  :P

Ill ask my mate, he worked as a motec programmer for the V8 Supercar team for orange mobile i believe.

The Nissubishda will live....

I've been checkin it out with rallying and it seems pretty easy actually.

I know in adelaide you just join a club, get a license or on the day buy a license, and just bloody go for it :P

expensive after a while though for tyres and such, but if your willing to put the money in then its worth it all :)

There are some cheap forms of racing. Check out www.amrs.net.au

They have a category called Super TT which is a combination of Commodore cup, super sedan, improved production and saloon car classes. They also have a sub-category for Jap imports. Much cheaper than $50k to get in!!!

Rod Dale (one of the organisers) is a top bloke. Drop him a line for some info. I had quite a long chat to him about it!

AMRS are actually holding a day at Wakefield Park in December for anyone that is interested in getting into motorsport. Check out their website for details.

Cheers!!

theres always lots of grassroots motorsport around like motorkhana and khanacross, hillclimbs etc, but they are more fun than anything i think.

seems that most v8 drivers these days went through go-karting, open wheelers (such as formula fords), both of which seems to be relatively cheap forms, then perhaps touring cars in the UK or the development series of the V8 supercars (i forget the series name)

Main thing is skill, if you got that then you ll be head hunted no doubt.
