Removing Centre Console
« on: Sep 27, 2005, 04:43PM »
Gday,
I'm trying to remove my centre console. I've unscrewed the two screws under the steering wheel, i've removed the plastic bracket which surrounds the gear stick and removed four screws from there. I've started to pull off the plastic that surrounds the headunit etc but its stuck near the side of the steering wheel well. I may just need to give it a good yank but I want to be sure before I break something  ::)
If no one understands, i'll take a pic.
Cheers.

NO!!! Dont yank it. The bottom big bit under the steering wheel needs to be loosened. There is one screw under there near the top that holding it in place.
If you undo the bottom left screw (closest to the centre console) on the plastic covering and just unclip the left side and pull it away slightly you will see the screw near the top just under the woodgrain.

Hope that helps..

Don't fully understand though, would you mind making a simple diagram?

OK hope this nice drawing helps.
The red line is rought outline of the centre console that comes out. Note the clips under the woodgrain and behind the bottom plastic cover.
Green is where the screws are that you wanna remove.
Blue is the bit you want to pry apart by pulling towards yourself once the bottom screw is undone (green arrow). They're just clips so you shoulnt have too much trouble.
Then you'll see the screw (green dot up top on left) that you need to remove, its a bit of a pain getting it out of the gap but just hold the bottom plastic open and move it around. Make sure you unclip the cig charger first.

Thanks for the diagram mate.
Forgot to mention that i've already removed the screws from above the headunit.
I think I just need to remove the screw marked by the green dot.
I'll give it a go tomorrow.

On another note, the centre console from U13 AWD models will not fit the FWD models. The AWD models have more of a hump running down the middle. Also, the rear seats from a U13 AWD will not fit a FWD. The mounting bolts are in different places, most likely due to the AWD drivetrain.

No problem.

Did you buy the bits and find out that they didnt fit??

Nah, Jimmy and I tried to put them in. I bought the centre console anyway to experiment with vinyl dye on it and it still fit reasonably well :)

Now I just need a hand pulling out my dash cluster *looks at Ka-Bluey*  :P
I've had a look at my spare cluster and its easy to swap over the speedo from mine to it and i'll be replacing the illumination bulbs with blue led bulbs.
