Squeaky noise at engine startup
« on: Sep 20, 2002, 08:02AM »
I get a squeaky noise when i turn the engine on in the morning, it lasts for about 30 secs to a 1min or something then disapears. Im pretty sure its the belts. Should i be worried about it.....will it suddenly kill me engine if a belt goes? is the squeaky sound a sign that i should replace them?

ohyea i have had the noise for a while

thanks

change ur oil and see what difference it makes, old oil gets all crappy and doesnt tend to move around the engine as well when its cold, but when it runs freely it should be good.. its a start to solving the problem, if thats what it is..

i got a bit of prob with mine, well not really, when i start it up ie cranking the engine it makes a ting ting ting noise, just like that, then it starts up.. mmm and sorta does the same thing when i shut it down when it has warmed up, bit of a loud squeky noise when engine nearly stops ticking over.. not sure what it is, but sounds crazy, otherwise in normal drivin she purrs like a kitten  ;D anyone else experienced this hmm.. noise??

and well the belts hmmm, could be a problem, no engine damage i think, that only happenes when the timing chain flys apart as far as i know..

but prevention is better than cure!! check on all ya belts that they are not cracked and no fraying on outer edges, if there all sweet then u have no dramas.. and if there loose u can adjust them from the alternator mount, and if u have air cond, u can adjust belt from the idler im sure.

hope this helps

I had the same problem with the squeaking/screeching noice.  When the car was cold, steering wheel at full lock to the right, or occasionally when sitting in first gear at the lights.  Turned out it was a belt, I can't tell you which one cos when it happened I was due for a service, so I mentioned it to the mechanic and he fixed it for me.

Think about it shaunk...if it made the noise when you were in full lock, the belt would more than likey be running off your power steering pump.
In the 2.4 models, thats the main belt. It runs off the crank, turn the water pump, alternator and power steering. The second smaller belt runs the a/c.
In the 2.0l models, the main belt runs off the crank and controls the water and steering pump. The smaller second belt runs the alternator.
In 2.0l models with air, the crank runs the water and steering pump. Off that is a second belt that runs the a/c and off the a/c is a third belt which runs the alternator.
So....yeah, when you turn your car into full lock, i would assume its the belt running the power sterring pump. So figure it out for whichever model you have!
But you had already got it fixed, so this post was probably a waste of time. Might help someone in the future though!

yea my noise is probably the same as shaunk's but it only seems to happen at start up in the morning for the first time. (prob cold belts = tighter) and geez mitza = car technical manual, thanks.

On the topic of belts, I replaced mine (the main one-I don't have A/C) after it shat itself while I was going hard off the lights one night, luckily it didn't break, but it was les than 30% of its normal thickness  by the time I got it to a shop the next day! Cost about $60 fitted.
