Clutch replacement need engine out?
« on: Apr 17, 2007, 04:14PM »
Hey,

I'm new here, so g'day to all!  ;D
I have an import U13 SSS attesa.

2 Q's...
1. Can I get a consensus as to whether the engine HAS to come out to change the clutch? As the labor costs are massively different of course.

2. and whether the clutch is actually the same as the S14? I want to buy one off ebay.

Cheers gang.

Its reportedly easier to change the clutch with the engine out, then separate the motor/gb when out of the car.

Bungs has a thread somewhere in our tech articles detailing how he changed the clutch in his FWD U12 TRX in his garage.  It didn't look easy to me, but it is do-able.  However, the AWD's have two mounts holding the gearbox onto the chassis on the passenger side, the FWD's have one.

Will you be sending the car to a workshop or doing the work yourself?

The clutch IS the same as the S14.  The throw out bearing is not.  Get a genuine GTiR bearing from nissan.

It'll be going to the shop... I've had one quote at $1800 for labor only. My GTIR was quoted at $1500 labor almost a year ago now so it didn't sound far off. But the shop that might be doing the job wanted to see the car first to check if the engine had to come out or not. He quoted $400 labor if it didn't so i'm hoping it might not.

I did read that thread, thanks for that.

& thanks for the info about the clutch itself, good stuff that's what i needed to know. Do u know around how much a genuine GTIR throwout might be? Genuine nissan always scares me, an injector (that's 1 injector) was going to be $500.

GTiR bearings are $80 or so??  I priced a genuine one for my CA18DET ATTESA... was $78 ages ago.  But was going to take 3 weeks from japan, so my bearing is a GTiR one as well, but SKS not genuine nissan.

There was this big thing on GTiR Oz about SKS versus genuine nissan bearings, SKS items failing early.

There are big physically differences between the two bearings.

Comparable to a GTiR I would imagine... $500+ very dependent on where you go.

I have an Xtreme Clutch in my Attesa, it was replaced when the engine was out for it's rebuild, I don't know how much it cost, it was incorporated into the cost of the rebuild.

Does anybody know for sure which clutch goes into the U13?
GTiR or early or later 200SX clutch? I believe all three are different (teeth, flywheel size)...
I'd like to purchase one through the net, but am unsure which one to buy & nobody seems to know.

Jello.
Cheers for that. I actually forgot about the above answer (sorry, & thanks again to Budgie too), as i've had conflicting information from other people since then (I'm actually the thread starter & feel kinda dumb right now, heh), but I trust the guys here who've actually had it done before.

Anyone got any thoughts on this kit?:

ok so still, no one has answered, in 1 word (yes or no), whether the engine has to come out in order to replace clutch.
is there anyone any of u know who has replaced a clutch in one single job (i.e. not being part of a rebuild etc).

I have a gearbox sitting outside of the car at the moment and I can say with a degree of certainty that yes, the engine needs to come out, there just simply is not enough room.

I haven't heard of anyone changing a clutch with the engine in the car on an attesa.

Not on a bluebird, but I've seen pics of the job being done on a GTiR.  So in a word... 'yes' I could be done with the engine staying in the car, but fuck, it would be a shitty job no matter what.

It would have to take less time and effort (and therefore $$$) to just drop the engine and do it that way?

I reckon so.  Or rather, for a backyard job.  Unbolt the engine/gearbox from the car.  Then raise the car over the engine.

You can get the gearbox out without taking the engine out but by the time you muck around manoeuvering it out it's easier to drop the whole lot.

Replace your rear main seal (on the flywheel end of your crankshaft) when you're doing the clutch, it's only $15 or so for the seal. It's a bitch to replace if it starts leaking otherwise. Oh and use a new throwout bearing too. It's all just cheap insurance if you know what I mean.

ok i think the time has come for mine to be done, its slipping and shuddering the car when downshifting into 2nd gear if i dont rev match it...
what would be the cheapest way to get this done, labour wise?

Do it yourself... then labour is free! :D

But as for actual prices I have no idea, take it around to some mechanics and get quotes.

What would a fair labour charge be for such a mission as to replace the clutch?

as i stated above, if the gearbox needs to come off to change the clutch fork , i got my clutch fork replaced and the labour cost 700 just to take the box off

I have been quoted 8-9 hrs by a couple of mechanics around to replace the clutch.
So labour would be roughly between 600 - 750 bux

have these guys worked on a gtir or attesa? if they havent id probably ask someone who has. if they havent worked on one before they might not know how much work it actually takes to get the box off

one of em is a 4wd center .. had a good look at it ..
Dont think theyve done gtir or anything before but they work on 4wd systems alot and would understand more then the average mechanic im guessin..
i live in Port Macquarie.. no one here knows anything about imports which is funny coz theres a pretty big import scene here now..
