There seems to be a few antrx'ers that enjoy cycling, so...

What sort of bike have you got? - any modifications?
Where do you ride?
Fun, competition or transport?

I've got an Avanti Montari comp MTB, 2001 model
I ride on a mixture of roads, fire trails and single trail tracks. Usually for about 20km at a time.
Most of the riding I do is for fun/fitness, but sometimes I'll use my bike for transport

My bike is pretty damn old Tas, bought it myself when I was 14 or so (with paper round money... lol)

Its a cro-moly hard-tail... RST elastomer shocks up front, STX-RC/LX driveline... LX brakes, the older ones with the tiny handles (which I love). Its still perfect, driveline is great, brakes pull up on a dime and you can throw it around a fair bit.

Two sets of wheels, new mavic rims with deore hubs (light motherfuckers) these are running green slick verdenstein tyres. My older rims have my MTB tyres on them, so I can do as many skids as I like. You know how you use the locked up rear wheel to steer sometimes, shit like that.

I used to ride EVERYWHERE, that changed when I got my car.

I did ride too and from work for a while when I fucked my auto box in the car, then continued that for a little while... but riding to work at 5:30 in the morning got too hard! I love going out and hitting a complex, challenging trail. One of the better ones I love is out near Ayres Inlet (near Angelsea, just down the coast). Its a steep motherfucker, then once you get to the top there are always 2-3 wedgetailed eagles soaring around on the updraft from the end of the valley/start of the otways.

Then you hammer back down, jumping over anything thats too big to roll over

My bike is at the back, with the fucking slick up-front (got a flat on the MTB tyres 1hr before me left, so rode the trails on a slick front tyre and knobbly back one... haha)

I guess this all comes from my old man being a hardcore roadie, with his two bikes (one for training, one for racing). Races every sunday and rides at least 2 times a week.

well i have 2 mountain bikes and a road bike.. (gt, diamond back & my no-name road bike) nothing special, i like to keep my bikes simple.. a guy at my old work used to keep bagging me out for the old technology on my bikes.. thing is, my technology isnt really that old and still does the job that is asked of it

the gt i bought in melbourne as a mode of transport while on holidays. when i bought it (in the city) i checked the tyres, jumped on, and rode to southland shopping centre for a drink via beach road (about 25k each way).. turns out it was 41 degrees that day! its a bit heavy compared to my other bikes but it has a huge frame making it easy to ride because i can stretch out.

the diamond back is pretty light but has a smallish frame.. after riding the gt i feel cramped up on it.. the road bike, also smallish frame but is more comfortable to ride than the diamond back after the gt.. its quite light, probably lighter than the diamond back.. i'm at the moment contemplating upgrading the wheels, crank and gearset or buying a new road bike for around $2k. i'll probably just go with the component upgrade.

i got my bikes up here from melbourne 2 weeks ago, i'm planning on going on my first ride since being in brisbane this sunday, and from there i'm going to make an effort to get back into daily cycling and get back in shape.

my usual bike ride that i used to do is around the redcliffe peninsula which is about a 20km round trip which is a good daily ride (red line), but with boardwalks having been constructed along the margate beach front it tends to be a difficult job fighting for road/bike track space with cars and pedestrians. the other ride i used to do a bit was from redcliffe to sandgate and back which is also a 20km round trip (blue line), because there are less people using the beaches at brighton and sandgate and a long stretch of the ride is the old hornibrook bridge, i might start doing this ride more often.

there is another ride i used to try do at least once a fortnight which is a 40km round trip (green line) but its pretty bad at some points dealing with the traffic.

This is what I race. My brother and I built this trike out of old road sign posts and coreflute and a trampline mat. We race it at a 24 hour race in murray bridge and 2 6 hour event on the V8 supercar track in adelaide. Its kinda a school based race but we enter in the open class and do fairly good for the $0 budget we work on. Finished 13th overall in the championship. This thing can do about 65 km\h and can cruise easy at 40km\h on a flat road. Oh yeah, our team name is Team Bluebird.

Thats not me in the picture. Thats my mate in our team uniform. We bought them from the local swap shop for $2.

We dont race with that stupid flag on the bike, thats only there cos the copped pulled us over and told us we were speeding and made us put a flag on it while we were training.

My GT Avalanche 3.0 Disc 2005. Bought it towards the end of last year and use it mainly for fun, sometimes as transport to work. I've hit the forest here in Adelaide with it, was great fun getting dirty

Also got a speedo to keep me occupied on it. I like doing skids on it it's fully sik

GO GT MTBs!

Pretty much a year ago i brought a GT Avalanche 0.5 - bloody hot! has Marzocchi air forks, 9.0 SRAM shifters and deraileurs (tho front deraileur is Shimano LX Deore), Truvativ cranks, Crank Bros Eggbeater pedals, Shimano Deore hydraulic disc brakes. they;re the main pretty things!

as mentioned in other threads/posts, i've started xc mtb racing every thurs. i wanna upgrade me wheelset and rubber, as from the factory they're not as good as i'd like them to be, esp the back tyre - its soooo worn down atm

I have a 2000 GT Vertigo bike, it's more of a trick bike than anything, just got it for riding around though many years ago. Don't ride it much these days. Prolly not as good for long rides and certainly not for terrain, but hey.

It's a bloody tank of a bike, but that makes it solid and strong, looks cool too. One awesome thing about it is, provided I take the bottom of the reat seat out, It fits very snug into the back of my car without dismantling, so I can just pull it out again whereever and ride around

hey bungs that is exactly the same as my bike that was stolen from Adelaide Oval whilse the test match was on earlier this year!! I was sooo pissed at the time, and insurance still ahsnt payed up yet!!!

mine's mostly for fitness and a bit of transport, works a treat when i'm running late for uni lol.
always had mountain bikes and yeh, got an avanti escape when i got my flat in town cause the one i've got at home needed a fair bit of work done.
never raced mountain bikes, but i think theres a pretty good track near glenorchy somewhere (is that right Tas?) there was a big competition there a while back.

I have a bright blue 2005 GT Fly. I just kinda cruise around in it, and do stupid stuff on it like try to stand on the pegs that are just on one side...not a great thing to try with ppls watching on the espy

I used to have 2 bikes until a few weeks ago. A BMX/cruiser and a Racer.

My bmx was a mongoose menace, beautiful and chrome. i got it brand new in 1998 and it only looked about 2 years old when i got rid of it before christmas. I never used it for stunts because the frame was too heavy, its bigger than other bmx's so its quite comfortable to ride around on. Over the many accidents i've had (sliding off, drink riding etc.) the only major thing that went wrong was the cranks. it was a bloody good bike. I'm thinking about buying my cousin a new bike just so i can have it back.

my Racer, which i've had for over 2 years now is a Malvern Star 'outlaw'. the bloke I bought it from used to use it for racing. it's got good acceleration when some fool thinks its got no balls. just whack it in to top gear and say goodbye. its a weird pale green colour, which i call anti-theft technology. Its got an oval shaped crank disc, a mate from a bike shop tells me they were popular in the 80's so that gives me some idea of how old the bike is. I've got a Sigma bc800 computer and a set of lights so I can ride at night. since having the computer i've learnt i can do 68k's downhill and 53k's uphill if I dont want any leg muscles by the time i'm done.

extremely light and it's nice and comfy to ride

i have a norco mountain bike (canadian made) with front suspension ...bought about 7 years ago ......doesnt get much use these days ......maybe 6 30km rides a year ........i keep trying to get back in to it ...but cant ........oh well one day i suppose

actually, on the subject, i saw your trx i think last year, was on the bike track near the tasman bridge one night. i'm pretty sure its the only silver trx i've seen.

i use to ride to the station to get to tafe, i rode a dodgy melvin star mountain bike. i would ride the 5km to the station, take the train to southbank, then ride the 2km around the river to the kangaroo point cliffs (for brissy ppl) and had to carry my bike up the stairs, and id do this twice a day.

one funny story involving riding home from tafe, i was riding home, and started down the street which passes under the capt cook bridge, mind you the road is on almost a 45deg decline, and my back wheel locked up, and seeing as i was doing close on 50 odd kmh, it game me a bloody fright! anyway the bike has kept going with the wheel locked down the hill, and i managed to get it around the corner, still at speed, i got to the point where the road met up with the one that goes along the bottom of the cliffs, and stacked it right infront of the tafe shuttle bus, packed with my class mates!!. i looked at the bike, and the little freewheel on the back had somehow been pulled into the wheel and snapped a few spokes....needless to say, it was rooted!!

FINALLY got my new bike today!!!

Its a GT Chucker series and ill tell you she goes nice - bit average with constant momentum due to the fat arse tyre's and tread.

Has the RST up front and a nice bulky, but light frame

Only thing i need now is to get my self a spedo - a nice wireless one of ebay looks appealing

I've been a bit skeptical about Mongoose bikes, they were the brand of bike to have when I was at school. But one day some kid lent on another kids mongoose bike, and that alone dented the frame a bit.

My Vertigo weighs a bloody ton but if I have it in the back of my car I bet it'd be almost as effective as a rollcage should something happen

oh, i wouldn't worry about GT now being made $hitty, they're still designed in California (i think), yet Mr Gary Turner (where GT came from for those not in the know....) just doesn;t own the company anymore! (well, that's what me bike shop have told me!). Tho like majority of bikes these days, GT's r made in Taiwan. its not unless you go to the expensive stuff like Cannondale (handmade in US) or Ellsworth (UK - i think....) bikes that they're NOT made in some asian factory....

anywho, yeah i've always not been a fan of Mongoose, yet Advanti bikes r pretty good, so is Trek. Giant also offer good value 4 money, they're been in the game for a while now and so u know their products r quality stuff!

Might go riding now....

just thought i'd quickly let u guys know about the little adventure round lysterfield....

last Sunday i went out to Lysterfield park - where they're having the commwealth games for those not in the know - and was bloody awesome! all up, there's 10 tracks/trails of varying technicality for you to ride about on. two of me mates from work and i rode for about 2 - 2.5 hours exploring the joint and seeing what (not) capable of.

the day started off fairly badly as me mate left his skewer for his rear wheel in the car park where i picked him up. so while i waited at lysterfield park, me other two mates drove off to goldcross cycles in narre warren/fountain gate. then the next drama was about 10 mins into our ride, me rear wheel caught the edge of a rock and i got a freakin puncture - 2nd one in 2 weeks! luckily i had a spare and was able to change it over quickly.

there's some really good free flowing single track trails and a few trails that have "little" log sections to ride over - by the end i was fair fcuked! but i'll be back there.... if anyone else wants to taste what the commonwealth games track is like and a range of the other trails there, or just wanna hav a thrash round some quality trails - after all, they did spend like 3 million on getting the park up to scratch! - let me know and we'll set up somthing!

ive got a Cell brand bike, down hill style with dual suspension dual crown front forks and disk brakes front and rear, i spent ages trying to find a bike with good components and the right price eg most shimano gear latest model parts etc. It goes pretty good and ive ridden it about 300ks since before christmas. its comfortable on the road and the rear suspension doesnt seem to squat too much. off road its a weapon its holds its own really well and ive given it alot of shit. great handling on rugged bush trails, but i wouldnt take it off too many 1mtr drops! the only prob ive got is steep uphill off road where sumtimes the rear shock takes the brunt before its all transferred to the wheels. i was a bit dubious going from a well known name mtb, but this newby certainly put me in my place.

I've got two fairly old bikes. a gemini mtb, great bike, no trouble with it and it has taken lots of thrashing over the years, and a road bike, lenny rogers frame with shimano sti's and derailers - i used to do a bit a racing.

I'm looking to buy a new mtb, what would u recommend (seems as though gt's are pretty good)

hehe, i think its just by chance that quite a few ppl here have GT's.... whenever i go riding, bugger all ppl have GT's....

having said that, go get one!

depending on the type of mtb'ing u plan to do, but for most ppl, the "Avalanche" series offer good value for money. I'm pretty sure that the lower number on the avalanche series (ie: avalanche 0.0, 0.5, 1.0....) then the higher spec the bike is. me mate brought a GT Avalanche 3.0 at the start of this year which is fairly well spec'ed for the price. plus u can always talk turkey with the bike shop dude/dudette and get them to chuck in a free helmet, bottle cage &/or lights.... Giant mtb's r usually good value too. Trek and Avanti are worth checkin out, and unless u plan to do "north shore" riding, then i'd forget about Norco

Went for a good 1.5 hr ride today with a mate through a park, did 15km of trails all up which was good. Only the second ride I have done in about a year! $:-\$

EDIT: Meh, can't find it, but its a Red and White GT 'Aggressor' hardtail. Getting on a bit these days...about 7 years old at least I think.

yeh cant afford cash up front, he dropped it to $1960 and still offered layby for the lower price. its a nice bike, carbon fibre rear end and forks, carbon fibre seat post and carbon fibre seat.. i might have my colours confused, but i'm pretty sure the new 2006 model is black.. suits me even more

ok well here is my new bike.. budgie wanted a look see, so i'll post it up.. as i previously posted, i was looking at the giant ocr zero first up, but i havent been doing much riding over the last few months so i thought i'd get myself something new, but cheaper.. so i settled for an ocr3, its an '06 model that was in the showroom, so its brand new, but cause the '08 models have just been released the price was dropped from $1100 to $700. its got upgraded cranks and pedals, carbon saddle and upgraded to michelin tyres, otherwise its pretty standard.. standard fare on these being carbon forks and seat pole, shimano sora gear (so good gear but not the best) and those fancy schmancy gear changers that i cant think of what they're called right now

took it for a 20km ride the day i bought it, and it rained every day after that until sunday, so i went out for a 40km ride sunday. its just so nice to ride compared to my old bike, i just keep riding and riding where as the old bike i'd ride 10-15km a day and that'd be it i couldnt do any more. and the bike weighs maybe 1/3 of what my old one weighs.. so yeh, very happy so far. good to get back into it.

was lookin at the TCR and OCR range from giant when i was in the market a few months back. the TRC range is a bit more race orientated in its geometry; OCR has a more 'relaxed' setup. was uber close to gettin an OCR C2 or C1, but opted for somethin different....

that's new new toy that i've been ridin around since i've pretty much destroyed me mtb after a crash.... tho the drivetrain was on its way out anyways!

anywho, as you can see, its an Azzurri 'Forza' roadie, full monocoque carbon frame, shimano ultegra drivetrain/brakes/shifters, plus thought id even go carbon on the bottle cages!

as you can see with this bike.... well it hardly is a bike atm! rebuilding it!

so i've been ordering stuff from the bike shop and net (www.torpedo7.com.au is a god sent! i'd HIGHLY recommend you guys check it out if you haven't done so - their prices shits all over retail prices!)

My GT finally got an upgrade

The Promax mechanical disk brakes that came with the bike sucked a fat one so I did a small upgrade this afternoon to Hayes hydraulic disc brakes with 8" rotors

Should have no problems stopping now.

Well I took my old school Malvern Star 'outlaw' to the bike shop to get some repairs the other day, I knew every single bearing it had was broke so I told the bloke that, he added up what it needed ontop of regular servicing, new brake cables etc and it worked out to about $200, a bit pricey. t'was a good bike when it ran (55k's up hill

) but it was time to move on.

The povo bike he had in the shop was about $300, but i wanted something a little more classy with dampened forks and disc brakes baby. So after a toss up between the Avanti and the Giant heres what i ended up with, Picked it up on sat for $499 and haven't even had a chance to ride it cos of weather/busy

I did however have time to chuck my lights and trip computer on.

Man i miss the days when a pushie was my only mode of transport, This will give me the motivation to get back into it too

just got back from a mild 10k ride, damn this is a good bike. I dont know if i regret opting for dampened forks or not yet, I'm very used to how solid forks handle. The main downfall is i can't get any air off kerbs

No biggie i guess, at least they have less chance of bending.

I'm so used to driving a car now i keep feeling around for a high-beam switch so I can see more. I've got a little cat eye led light, its good but I think i need one a little brighter, suggestions anyone?? I dont ride during the day because I never have time.

majoirty of LED's in the bike store will only give off enuf light for cars to see you - ie: be seen, not to see. its not until u get like a 1W LED or more that it will giv off enuf light for you to actually see with.

if there's enuf street light for you to see with, then the cateye one u hav should be sufficient. however, if u want more light to actually light up the street/path/trail, then there are a few units around - all depends on how much u wanna spend!

cateye, knog, niteflux, cygolite, topeak, niterider, vetta, blackburn, lupine an HID technologies all do really good halogens/LED lights designed for trail riding - obviously givin off enuf light to light up the trail

these lights are all powered by a rechargable battery. depending on model and usage/function, batteries will last anywhere between 3-6 hours. this is pretty good seeing as they provide a HUGE amount of light compared to the 'normal' LEDs.

unless i'm mistaken, those are Marzocchi EXR Pro forks on there.... if so, then they're an air dampened fork - which is really good, but interesting, as that model fork is a XC fork, not a dirt jump fork....

hi, yes my bike is for allmoutian, "light Freeride" or "urban assault" this fork is for allmoutain or Xc, and works very good in my bike still

, and I`m thin (60 kg), if that isn´t much effort for the fork.

Question for the cyclists. I bought a mongoose mountain bike the other day and am unsure of what is the best tyre pressure for on road.

Guy at the shop I bought it from told to pump them up to 65psi, a little to high I think.

That sounds ok dave, if in doubt.. there should be a max/ recommended tyre pressure on the sidewall of the tyre.

I run about 60psi if I'm riding on the road regularly (which isnt very often thank christ!) and obviously lower offroad.

Road bike tyres take a helluva lot more pressure.

i sold the old bmx coz i kept breaking bones at the skate park and from riding home drunk late at night.....

so i bought a mtb thinking that would ease the pain but since buying my giant 18 mths ago I have broken my elbow and forearm in seperate incidents, and donated about 12 mths of skin growth from my shins to the you yangs rock garden fund....

I think the best place to get advice would be a decent bike shop.. they build, repair and sell the bikes and would hear feedback on them you'd imagine.. just make sure you talk to someone there with experience and not someone who just works 1 day a week for some extra $!

Tell them about the exact kind of riding you will and may be doing and definitely customise on things like tyres and brakes - usually the ones that come with bikes are not ideal.

I have a mountain bike which i have semi-slick tyres on that I run about 70-80psi. I only ride on roads and tracks and a bit of gravel - it's certainly not that grippy in the gravel but on any made surface its fast and nimble. My tyre of choice is Specialized Nimbus EX. In 4 years, between my mate and I we have had a total of 1 puncture ! (over 5000km each.. wet and dry) this is one of the main reasons I like this tyre! I hear they do not make that specific model any more but perhaps there is an equivalent. Worth looking into ! It's great to never have a puncture.

I seem to have the worlds crappiest luck when it comes to punctures recently, which has got me so pissed off I've not been on my bike for a few weeks!

the felt tk2 are an awesome bike for track in my opinion haven't seen too many masi or pinarello bikes around but judging on pinarello road bikes they are high quality bikes
you're right there is a velodrome up carnegie way but they don't usually get a great rollup for their track meets. There's a few other ones around though, the one that i race at (blackburn) and chelsea's track. They also have racing in at the new indoor velodrome over at darebin (DISC) on thursday nights, even if you just go there to check it out its good racing

old thread i know blah blah, but i built up a new bike based on an oem frame from china.. yes, china. the frame, forks, seat post and handlebars together weigh 1.1kg and cost me a measly $560 so if it breaks, i just buy a new one.. suckers!

all up i've spent $2145 on the bike, buying most of the parts from wiggle - about half the price of the local bike shops for each respective part.

in total the bike weighs 7.8kg and is quite nice to ride, unfortunately though shit weather in brisbane while i'm not at work means i've only put 50km on it.

kit is something along the lines of:

shimano ultegra sl groupset
fulcrum racing 3 alloy wheels
schwalbe ultremo r1 tyres (will have to be changed to something more durable)
nokon red annodised brake cable (gear cable did not arrive!)
ritchey bio max saddle
prologo bar tape
etc etc

i have been planning for a while to ride to the city from home (about 35km on bike tracks/27km by road) each day for work, all was waiting on this bike. but yes, weather. stupid weather.

yeh mate of course i've been riding it

has been raining on an off up here though and i dont particularly want to ride this one in the wet. set up a bit more kit for longer rides. its quite good to ride. very comfortable and quick to get up speed too. big jump going from an '06 ocr 3 to this

also forget that java app, it dials home and then unregisters itself. got an android phone now so i'll be trying to remember to record my rides.

hey all thought i'd give a heads up for those that don't have cycle computers and just want to monitor what they're doing i've been trying out endomondo on my android phone. its a free app and gives distance, average and top speeds, maps out the route, you can get a bluetooth heart rate monitor from them that it will work with as well which i suppose is where they get their money from.

pretty nifty, i've got my maps set to private so you can't see where i live (dirty stalkers) but you can see speeds and what not, worth considering if you don't have a cycle computer.
