It's rather hard to overfill a gearbox in the first place, but if you did somehow manage to put to much in then it'll stress the gearbox seals due to excessive pressure.

Its damn near impossible to overfill a manual ka24e box unless you sit the car pointing skyward. Not sure about the autos - but dont they have a dipstick to check fluid levels (i have nfi about auto boxes).

but id say it could likely slow you down. I wouldnt be worrying about that as much as i would be about blowing seals and dumping the fluid, causing expensive repairs

Jack up one side of the car, crawl under and fill up your gearbox. you'll overfill it for sure  ;)

dont they have a dipstick to check fluid levels (i have nfi about auto boxes).
They do have a dipstick, and when I last replaced the oil in my transmission, my dad (with 20-something years of auto transmission rebuilding experience) said to either slightly under or overfill the transmission according to the dipstick. I think he said overfill, but I'm not sure. Anyway, having a little too much fluid in an auto box won't slow you down too much, since it's so thin and all it touches is the diff.

yeah, but who measures fluid levels when the car is jacked up? (what you said would apply also if the car was on ramps).

Also, I wouldnt be crawling under the car with only a jack supporting the raised bit. Ive had mine fall off a jack before.

I didn't mean for you to actually do it, I was just giving an example of when it wouldn't show the right level.

And I wouldn't ever get under a car that was just supported by a jack.

Gearboxes have an overflow right? If you have to much it will overflow out the breather.
If you only have a little too much, when it gets real hot, it will expand and overflow until the level gets to the operating level.

It is potentialld damaging on an auto, but not too much of a worry. On a manual, you will lose power for sure as the shafts are not immersed in oil normally, they just touch it and it gets sprayed everywhere.

I just checked with him about over/under filling the transmission, and he said to slightly overfill it by <5mm.
