Aftermarket Gauges
« on: Aug 2, 2002, 04:51AM »
Anyone out there fitted any aftermarket gauges to their ride?  I'm gonna get a tacho, cos my Gli doesn't have one in the instrument cluster.  Rather than get the gauges and set up from a TRX or Ti or whatever I am going aftermarket.  Anyone had experiences with this?  I wouldn't mind fitting a small tacho on the A pillar, but farked if I know how hard this might be.  Ideas? ???

Hey shaunk, I havent fitted a tacho but i have installed an air / fuel ratio gauge. It was pretty expensive even though I installed it all myself. I mounted mine on top of the dash sort of between the steering wheel and the A-pillar RHS. Had to run 2 wires, one for power [ign] and the other to the O2 sensor - which is on the exhaust manifold. Im not entirely sure whats involved with doing the tacho - but from my experience it was fairly easy to install my gauge - just a bit pricy - total cost was over $200. The gauge itself was $160 at the time, now they are around $120-$130  >:(

nah, its an autometer one [i bought from autobahn]. Its the one on the right of this pic http://www.autometer.com/hp/2001_catalog/racing/racing_art/4372_75_large.jpg

i think the jaycar one is much cheaper and displays actual numbers...dont know about accuracy though. mine works well - rich fuel delivery - but the gauge works fine ;)

Without some serious mods, the ECM on the GLi can't accomodate a Tacho.  However, as far as I know, most aftermarket tachos connect to the negative side of the ignition coil. ie, any car with spark plugs can have a tacho installed!

Has anyone here swapped over the KA24E dashes (all have tacho's) in a CA20E engined pinny/corsair (which, don't have tacho's ?).

Did that make sense? :)

Nope, the CA ecu won't be able to drive the KA instruments without mods.

I'm actually looking at an Apexi EL meter series II exhaust gas temp gauge and oil pressure gauge. $165 for the control unit to drive up to 6 gauges, approx $350 ea for the EGT and oil pressure gauge.

budginator, just go to repco and get a speco one like me  ;D i paid $160 for mine,  it has a memory shift light, and green backlighting which is pretty sweet, easy to run the wires around the vent on top of the dash too.

whereabouts is the negative point to connect to on a ca20e? there are two coils and there is no visible negative point on the coils. if you look down the side closest to the front of the car next to one of the coils there are two little black boxes with two black wires running to them. im thinking this is the negative ground, where you might connect your aftermarket tacho? is that correct?

you have to hack off the rubber bit going around the wires, i think its the wire thats darker, but if u have a look at it, it is able to be found..... if u cant, jsut hack one, try it, if not, try the other... but you also have to pick the right coil, cause with the ca20e one is for the other set of plugs, which only detonates after 4000rpm......ill get a pic and show u when i get the chance, i havea  tacho on the a pillar...

is this referring to those two wires going to the two little black boxes beside the coil?

a picture would be SWEET. ive just spent today rigging up my autogage and ive done everything bar the ignition coil so a pic of your coil setup sometime thisarvo would be AWSOME.

okie doke. ive tried both of those wires going to the two black boxes. neither work. im guessing you mean hacking into the other wires comming from the bottom on the ignition coil..? im just worried about consequences if i hit a wrong wire.. ?

yea ive been tapping into them. cutting them would make alot more work for me upon choosing the wrong wires  :-\

thanks natho. now i know i wont be doing any damage by tapping into the wrong wires. i might head down to the garage now for a bit of trial and error tapping. woot  ;D

wooohooo! i now know the joy only felt by seeing a lifeless tacho spring to life at 800rpm!

for future reference the wire that i tapped into was the grey / black wire off the coil closest to the firewall (first wire i tried too :P).

the colour wires u mentioned are not the same for all ca20e motors, cause my coil pack blew up and i got one off a corsair and the wiring colours are different, but the bit about the one closest tio teh firewall is right... good job!!
