Legality of indicators
« on: Aug 12, 2011, 04:59PM »
Just wondering if anyone's ever bothered to check what the specifications of an indicator must be passed to be 'legal'. IE emit light of this wavelength, or from this wavelength range... There doesnt seem to be really *any* variation in stock indicators, hence why i ask.

They need to be orange in colour and be visible distance X from the vehicle front and rear.  I think there are regulations on how far from the center line of the car they must and min height above ground also.

There are regulations on the minimum distance apart, certain wavelength of light (i.e. colour), intensity, viewing angles, location (height, facing front/rear/side). To top it all off to be ADR compliant they must be examined and certified by the relevant authorities and have certain markings applied.

Depends on what I'm allowed to do. ATM playing with ideas all the way from relocating and changing the colour to 'hiding' the indicators so they can only be seen when blinking.

The upside is that atm it doesnt look like I'll -need- to move them, i've got plenty of room between the flares and the start of the indicator, but that may change when wheels are sized up... And I detest Amber. :D

Still need to call vicroads about it...  ::)

I'd imagine indicators only need to be seen when blinking, but maybe it doubles as a reflector in which case i can't hide it... =/
