A suspension question
« on: Mar 21, 2008, 10:01PM »
Is it possible to replace springs without fully removing the strut from the car.

To elaborate, I was wondering if u could just compress the springs and undo the nuts on the top of the strut and then jack up the car and drop the strut down, take the spring off and put the new ones on without having to completely remove the thing from the bottom. I ask as i dont want to have to pay for another wheel alignment so soon.

You could always put marks where the strut joins with the hub. That way you just have to line up the marks when you assemble everything again. I suspect that you won't be able to get the strut clear of the springs if you try to disassemble it while it's still on the car.

I think you can mate. I tried it with mine but it was a c*nt to do so I just pulled the whole thing out  ::)

For the $50 for a wheel alignment it might be worth getting the whole thing out just to save the hassle. See what other people say because it's been over a year since I did mine.

Its more than $50 for a wheel alignment up here. To get front and back done without buying tires ur looking at more like $75-80 and ive just had it done like 4 weeks ago.

Are the springs your putting in the car the same height as the ones currently in there? If not then you'll need a wheel alignment anyway to correct the height difference.

It's a bit more work but you can take the whole strut and hub assembly out as one. No need to get the camber reset then unless you're lowering or raising the car.

never change springs without pulling the strut out off the car, you trying to hurt yourself?
they hold alot of tension.

you will need a wheel alignment, both ends should be done at the same time as one end can make the other incorrect.
