what to look for when buying an r31 pintara/skyline
« on: Jun 22, 2004, 06:54PM »
feel free to add any adjustments.
list is made from personal expereince and info from other r31 owners at r31skylineclub. these are additional things to look for on top of the basics u look for when buying a car.

condition of paint, common to find fading on roof and boot + Evidence of resprays (plastic seals in roof and rear windscreen)

Cracks in tail lights

Water in head lights/ tail lights (common)

Rust - common areas are on the roof near the windscreen, around tail lights, underneath rear spoilers, bottoms of the doors, in rear doors where galv bracket for window winder touches the panel

Remove spare tyre, jack, and carpet from boot and look for evidence of water (common)

Thickness of brake rotors. when test driving note any pulling to the side on hard braking, squealing, grinding etc.

Interior:

Lights check/ dash gauges/ trip computer /clock

Electrics- mirrors/ aerial

Cruise control (skylines)

Air vents (check that all vents move, and test that the heater cable is still connected, by moving the selector)
Lights in doors

Lights in roof

Steering wheel (make sure the wheel isn't separating from the wire inside)
Rear demister

Door locks/ central locking, plastic door lock covers. very very hard to get.

Engine/mechanical:

Exhaust manifold studs

Diff - listen for clunks (common, however strong)

Check for fluid leaks (is the car parked on grass or gravel? If so, be suspicious!)

Check colour of radiator fluid (should show no signs of rust)

gears:
Autos: check colour of tranny fluid (shouldn't have dirty or metallic specs in it, and shouldn't smell burnt)
manual: throwout bearing. listen for a rough spinning noise when in gears 2,4,R
clutch, ask about replacements, especially in pintaras

Leaking steering rack (Look for greasy stuff all over the rack).

Corroded Crank Angle Sensor Plug.

Spark plug condiiton (not running too hot, oil on plugs etc)

Windscreen washer bottle/ motors prone to leaks

Excessive lifter noise (tick tick tick tick) -NOTE!! All RB30 motors will tick, don't be too stressed about ticking, only be concerned if it sounds NASTY!

Before you start the car, pop the bonnet and have a look at the motor.
Move your hands over things (even if you don't know what you're looking at ) if there is any warmth in the motor to indicate that the car has been running, it may have cold start issues. (The seller may have warmed the car up before you came to inspect it)

Look for evidence that the camshaft belt was replaced at 100,000k, 200,000k's etc.

Also the viscous fan coupling (stops the fan spinning when cold)

And there's not much I can say
But we miss you every day
And I'm bitter 'cause it's unfair
We'll be drinkin' in the sun
Playing music having fun
Cause one day I'll see you there

if the car is cold reach under and try n twist the driveshaft. hopefully there is little or no play in it.

its common especially for the ones with lsd to have play in them. we dont want that at all.

dont worry if the diff whines..... thats normal.
If the lights in the back of the trip computer dont work... dont owrry hardly any do.

all in all a great list.

I'd like to add - Look for evidence that the camshaft belt was replaced at 100,000k, 200,000k's etc.

They're a bastard when they break

Also the viscous fan coupling (stops the fan spinning when cold) Mine died just after i got my R31. Cost $250 to replace.
