Gear Changes?
« on: Aug 23, 2002, 08:11AM »
This may vary between each the cars eg. enghine size, mods etc, but for those who drive manuals, when do you feel is the best time (performance wise) to chage gears?
Anyone flat change too?

1-2 5500-6000
2-3 6500-7000
rough answers.
Since I got my HD clutch, I can keep going hard and change quicker than with the stocko...I would have had no hope back then.

If im not mistaken, dont we cut out round 6700rpm?
So changing anywhere between 6500 and 7000 would be if not impossible, but more than likely, hit the cut off and lose the revs?
I was thinking round 5500 for each gear, is that where our peak power is too? I mean, if you flat change you can just keep bouncing off the limiter, but its not that good im thinking for the car! But you can pull thirds flat changing!!!

I did say 'rough answers'. I try to get out of 1st as soon as I can, but go as close to cut off in 2nd as possible before a move to 3rd...I am talking about traffic light fun here...not normal daily driving.
I don't know precisely the cutoff, if you say 6700 ok, I know its somewhere close to 7000.

yeah.......thats sweet. I understood what you meant.
Can I just ask why..you want to get it out of first as soon as possible? Why not go till red line? Im used to doing that, and just curious if its an 'overkill'

I feel that first gear is really short, probably cos nissan r trying to hide the hole in the low revs, therefore i don't think it gives the speed that it should for the revs you pull...so I pull 2nd for taller ratio as soon as I can. Now I got a good clutch I can make the change and get quicker faster than if I redline 1st. But look, your not talking about much time difference.

whenever im up for a killing hehe  i tend to do:

1st up to 4700
2nd up to 4500
3rd up to 4000
and 4th well anytime..

but usually its time to back off in 3rd.. well street/trafic lite racing anyway..

on the strip well thats another story, but eh ill head there later, when the clutch is finally on last legs and cant adjust that master cylinder no more! good ol' hacksaws :)

have fun :P

as for the flat changes, i asked about this at tafe the other day. not a good idea in my teachers books, major syncromesh damage can result leading to possible gearbox failure if not properly done, so thats a fair caution, i dont wanna end up having a crunch box later down the tracks, and im not willing to risk it.

but hey thats my opinion and my teachers for that matter, but feel free to do it if ya like.

well i was just reading thru some old posts and noticed this... your not really gonna 'kill' anyone if you change at 4-4500 rpm.. that's my opinion anyway...

True, True, changin at those revs would not do you an justice.

Peak power being at 5500rpm you would want to change at about 5700rpm unless you have a modified cam etc.. Or you had a twin cam
