Incabin sub
« on: Oct 26, 2005, 07:03PM »
a few months back, you mite remember the thread about the free air sub being used in a box yadda yadda yadda.  since then, i've upgraded to a 12" in a ported box which is extremely satisfying, but now, i've got a 10" free air sub sitting around collecting dust.

sooooo..

i'm thinking about mounting it underneath the backseat in the middle (so essentially, it would only be a 4 person car).

i've scoped it out a little bit, and it doesn't look too hard to do, but i was just wondering about the legality of it all... of course, the sub would be firmly mounted underneath the middle seat, with that section of the foam being cut out, and then some reinforcement to make sure the seat is secure..

opinions? stupid idea or not? etc etc

Prolly wouldn't sound too crash hot as the volume of air needed to "free-air" subs is kinda large, and the volume of the seat is not.

Well you could still do it. But indstead of doing the middle of the bottom seat, why not do the middle of the back rest? That way you can use the air in the boot for the sub to push around. That might work and look better.

probably should have explained better...

there will actually be an open hole in the middle of the seat, exposing the magnet of the sub, thus making the cabin the air volume required..

any better?

i considered using the arm rest, but i'm trying to work out how to mount a fridge there..

mind you... it mite be easier to work the other way round, having the fridge in the seat, and the sub in the backrest..

Yeah, the other way round would be easier.

The way free-air subs are designed, they need a sealed 'wall' that they can be mounted to. I'd seal a sheet of MDF with the sub in the middle to the opening between the front of your boot/back of your seat, and stick in an MDF parcel shelf and see how that goes, then carve out your seat and mount the fridge in there  8)

Make sure you give the fridge enough ventilation.

You might need to get a mod plate done for the 4 seats, but as long as you still have the middle seat belt tucked away somewhere, and the fridge is sit-on-able you'll be right.

the fridge has a cushion on top... i wouldn't want to sit on it, but i guess i'd never have to worry about that (nobody else drives my car)..

cool... i'll look into it, i was thinking about the mod plating, i can't see it being a real problem, especially if i take out the seat belt, ensuring that nobody can sit there.

hmm, plenty to think about... i just realised that i got to invest in a 4 channel amp first tho, even if i did mount the sub, i've got nothing to run it off

No, freeair subs need lots of space on both sides, not just one side or the other.  After all, how can a sub tell in which direction it is mounted?

nah man, i don't think so... i read the instruction manual that came with it, and you mount the sub face down onto MDF, or something similar.  its the same as what jono sed.

the free air sub is specially designed with a stronger, more rigid cone.  the idea was that you mount it the parcel boards and such, so you don't need to have a box for it

this was taken from pioneer

Quote
Free-air Subwoofers -- A free-air system consists of woofers mounted to a board attached to the rear deck or placed in the trunk against the rear seat. The trunk acts as the enclosure housing the subwoofer. Free-air systems save space and have flat frequency response. The woofer must be specifically designed for free-air use, and the trunk must be airtight for the best results.

for the same purpose, the cabin will act as the housing for the sub

Free-air subs are designed to me mounted through a solid barrier, not against it. You still need to be able to see both sides of the cone.

I reckon you should mount it behind your ski port like I suggested before.

What does the fridge look like? Is it an esky-style thing like this:

Or is it something like this:

I say carve out your seat cushion, stick the cooler in between the two seats, then mount the sub in a sheet of MDF behind your ski-port.
