adjusting the timing
« on: Mar 2, 2005, 05:55PM »
can anyone please let me know how to adjust the timing on the ka24?
ive done it on an SR20, does it involve rotating the dizzy?

and how many degrees are in each increment? 5?

There are no set increments to adjust from on the actual distributor, but you're correct about the 5 deg increments, they are on the crank pulley.
You need a timing light to adjust timing, if you don't have one, don't attempt to fiddle with timing.

There are 2 bolts that attach the dizzy to the head.
Undo these 2 bolts until they are loose enough to turn the dizzy by hand, like turning a door handle so to speak.
If i remember right, turning the dizzy toward the front of the car retards timing, the other way advances.

I think  the ka is 15 deg ???

Yep.
I had look at the manual and it's  ka24 is (15 deg) increments and the ca20e 5deg.

What would be the max. amount of advance I would be able to dial into my CA20E on standard unleaded with extractors and the stock computer?

just a quick note on notches ca20e - my car goes from -5 to 20 degrees (6 notches) it is a 91, I have heard pre 90 they only went from 0 to 20 degrees. Also have heard best not to advance by more than another 7degrees. However I don't think advancing will turn your car into a v8 - but its your engine

I think best to leave it (OEM , original engineers manufacture , not sure if that's right, but close enough)  like it was original made to be.
Ofcourse if you have a different cam then the timming has to be set differently.

There is just the danger of detonation if not Done right(tuned up) and I think alot of head ache ,too.

You can get away with about 5 degrees advance on PULP.
