Gearbox leaky leaky.
« on: May 8, 2012, 04:45PM »
Hey guys, replaced driveshaft seals and the gearbox still leaks from the passengers side of the car. Where could the leak be coming from seeing as the driveshaft seals are brand new ?

Looking from under the front of the car, it leaks from the middle of the bell housing, trace the leaks to the back of the gearbox, kranz suggested the main seal on the back of the box, but I think it may once again be coming from the seal I just replaced 2 days ago.

So, if its the driveshaft seal again, then something else is wrong.

Either your shaft is dodgy (ha!) or something inside the box is not allowing the shafts splines to sit and line-up correctly.

Well I suppose the shaft will be easier than the seal. Well I had just drove 100+Kms to caloundra from Brisbane, with no problems. Just have to fill up my box so it doesn't fuck out. What should I look for when I pull the shaft out again ?

Being LSD, if my left driveshaft is fuxked for example, is that the one that's interchangible with all KA's and Ca's ? Or is that the right ?

i had a gearbox that was so fucked internally that it leaked ALL the time. I got a new drive shaft seal installed but al that did is slow it down a touch, one drive = empty gearbox. hope yours wasnt this bad lol

Mines only been like this since we had done the clutch. I cleaned it all up yesterday and sat the car on idle for 15+ minutes and no leak, but go for a drive, come back and it drips. But I'm confused of the last reply about shifts, can I use a passenger KA driveshaft from say a corsair ?

Pretty sure I've got one... it looks really nice sitting in my garage in a massive box of other random spares.

Now for the N0ooOBb question, is the cv the end of the shaft that goes into the box ? In which I can replace ?

well technically both ends have CV joints, but the outer one is where most of the issues usually occur.

Well, in that case it's got nothing to do with it, it's coming from the seal, so it's obviously not sitting in right even though car is still drivable, only been leaking since the clutch was done and new seals were put in twice, so it's obviously a human error somewhere I guess,

Out of curiosity, did you get the correct seal? I mean did you compare old and new before install?

I had trouble previously got the seal from repco and then supercheap, both were wrong, they insisted it was the correct part number from their book so must be right. Ended up getting the correct one from some small independent.

did you coat the outer lip of the seal with sealer before you fitted them?

correct part numbers: 51E00 is the LH LSD seal, 81X01 is the RH seal. non LSD uses 81X01 on both sides.

NO! it's NOT a fucking SR20!!

Shouldn't need to use a sealant since the seal is a light interference fit, can't hurt to use a little anyways for extra insurance.

The seal is tight, but I'll jack it up, remove the wheel, clean it up and seal the outer edge before I head home. Than if I get home and there is leaks there, than I'm fucked yo,

i went through $80 worth of seals thinking it was them but it turned out (reading the service manual) it was recommended to use sealer on them.

now it's drip free 20,000km on ;)

It's actually really good news that you had the same problem and fixed it with sealant. Hopefully that's my problem too.

Gearbox still leaks, just have been topping it up once every 3 weeks so the leak isn't that bad, even though I shouldn't be buying oil once every few weeks.

It is deff coming from the LHD LSD seal where it's supposed to fit snug around the shaft. Should I just get yet another new seal and also a LHD LSD shaft ?
