gearbox leaking alot

just bought a 91 trx 4 a grand with apr 2011 reg
car drives smooth engine runs fine but has a couple small issues
1) its leaking gearbox oil on my driveway, mechanic told me its coming from the gear selector seal
any one know how hard it is to repair
2) gearbox is making an annoying grinding noise in all gears including neutral but shuts up when clutch is pressed also shifts very smooth
been told 2 things from half a dozen people
mechanic reckons gearbox bearings gone and i need a rebuild $1500
and others are tellin me its the thrust bearing which came with the clutch kit i just bought (havent installed yet) bit worried if i install it id be wasting my time as gearbox would need to come out again to rebuild
any ideas

well i just pulled a manual gearbox apart myself, i can tell you that changing the selector boot wouldnt be a huge drama, not hard at all, just gotta undo one bolt pretty much....

As for the noise with the gearbox, sounds like your release bearing (thrust bearing). Smoothness of shift is not determined by this, so thats why the clutch kit should set u straight

Changing the boot wouldnt be a problem, however im sure there is a seal or something that is stuffed which is the reason its leaking as the boot isnt designed to hold the oil in.

thanks fellas
gonna put th new clutch in on the weekend
went to nissan and bught the new boot and a bush $20bucks (never thought nissan sold anything under 100 lol
the bloke over there was pretty helpfull he printed out a couple of exploded diagrams for me 2
hoping the boot solves the problem coz the oil is leaking through the old one, and on the diagram theres no other seal in that area

ok box is out and damn its buggerd
thrust bearing was sweet but there was oil in the bell housing
and theres a bearing rattling round in there
found another box for $150 gonna pick it up 2day hope its a good one
fingers crossed it all pans out
and damn what a pain in the ass it was to get out
