Cold air intake + summer = no no ?
« on: Oct 20, 2011, 03:40PM »
so heres what I can gather.

Cold air intakes in summer just do not work, due to hot air expanding and having piping over 1m long just creates a massive lag accross the REV range untill you hit 3500rpm.

Where as the same setup in winter works a treat as colder air is more condensed meaning quicker and easier air flow.

Opinions:
1: leave as is
2: remove piping after J30 MAF and conduct a short ram for faster throttle response and airflow ?

Just leave it as is, in summer the temperature outside should still be lower than the temperature under your bonnet. Still, cooler air flowing into the engine.

Where are you going to pipe the shorter ram pipe to? Inside the engine bay, where it is warmer that outside temps? If you're not getting enough air through your intake, your piping must be extremely small.

Either way, the difference on a stock ka is going to be minimal at best.

It's ryans old 3" mandrel bend cai with a j30 maf. Piping size isn't an issue. It's just the lag due to such a long piping setup. In winter there was no lag, now summer, it takes a bit to pick up.

I don't get it, isn't the air already in the intake? Why does it lag?

lol.

Yep, I'm lost. I don't get it.

The function of a CAI is to get the coolest air available into the engine and to reduce any restrictions which may be present in factory piping.. Are you saying that somehow you've created a situation in which the engine is using air faster than it can be replaced through the intake pipe? If so, how can it improve over 3,500rpm?

There is only one way in summer to get 'cold' air into your engine... and that's to drive around with a big f*** off air-conditioner attached to the front of your car.. or through a shopping centre.

your all morons, as we all know plastic tubing builds up static electricty from air flow, during the colder moths it it not so bad but during the hotter months it is worse, so the static charge in the pipe slows down the air flow due to the electrostatic drag from the pipe, over 3500 rpm the air is moving fast enuf that it becomes denser towards the middle of the pipe due to the air velocity and is not running as much on the outside wall of the tube therefore no as affected by the electrostatic drag created by by the static charge in the pipe.

Unfortunately it's steel pipe.

Mate, its called a boundary layer, and its thickness is defined by flow velocity, temperature and surface roughness. Has nothing to do with static electricity.

...Has nothing to do with static electricity.
But because it's (moving) steel pipe, and it's in the earth's magnetic field, it has it's own electric field and HENCE magnetic field. Thus air flow is ruined due to magnetism.

Don't be rediculous. Your fridge isn't moving! So all effects are negligible. But when you've got a magnet on the fridge door, and swing that open. Well... ever wondered why it's hard to open a fridge quickly? "vacuum", I hear you say? WRONG! GO HANG YOURSELF. It's magnets, fool!

all the piss taking aside, maybe clean out your throttle with throttle body cleaner, spray the aac valve as well, give the car a good tune (by that i mean clean the air filter, oil it lightly with air filter oil, check and maybe change plugs,  check fuel pressure etc etc) and also are you still using the antrx chip? i never gave you one for j30 i don't believe. could be the reason, that afm has a weird curve and requires a custom chip.

i ran that cai for years and as long as i kept the car tuned, no amount of static electricity, gravity or fucking magnets gave any reduction in power below 3500rpm. i actually calculated the length so the piping would hold as close as possible to 2.4 litres of air, which apparently is good for performance (intake holding same volume as your motor)

also while you're here asking questions, have a think about how many other people are running cai's and never swap them out for summer.

Pretty much every car built after 1995 has some form of cold air intake from factory, they dont get removed, you will be fine.

If it wasnt tuned to the J30 MAF it wouldnt be running would it :p The tune you gave me was the stage 3 suited to the J30 maf...

Yep, it would still run, but it would most likely run like a pig, because it would be returning a different voltage to the ECU than it would with the standard AFM.

i couldnt remember if i did you one or not. fuxxy is right though, it would run, but like a pig.

install some magnets in reverse polarity to the outside of the cai.
