r31 Skyline/pintara Suspension?
« on: Apr 16, 2004, 09:51PM »
HI peoples just aking for some wisdom here. I am currently saving up for a phat suspension setup e.g koni shocks, lowered springs, strut braces, swaybars and possibly some new bushings. Was just wondering if the R31 silhouette has swaybars (i am pretty sure it does) and how much do these differ from some heavy duty ones that i would buy? (300 odd for both). Also I want to upgrade wheels from 15 to 16 after i have my suspension will i have to change my suspension if i change my wheel diameter? would it look stupid coz it would be higher?
                cheers people
oh yeah my car has now recovered from its bush bashing trip oh yeah ;D

R31's (at least pintara's)

You do have sway bars, they're the round bar that's held on to the front cross member with the rubber around a metal collar.

Heavier duty ones will be thicker than the about 10mm ones on R31's.

Upgrading wheels, don't know about clearances between stuff, but legally you can go 16" by i think 7 or 7.5" (what were the skyline silhouette rims stock?) but it's one inch higher and one inch wider.

Suspension won't need much if you compensate for the bigger wheels by putting lower profile tyres on - unless you plan on keeping on bush bashing, then put higher profile tyres on to keep the sump away from those pointy rocks (personal experience)

just common sense, really. If in doubt get yourself a good mechanic and ask him, that's what I do!

That is correct last time i heard but u see a stock skyline came with 14s :)

the front swaybars are crap dude. A aftermarket one is much much better. 16s on a skyline still looks fair normal size and dont raise the heigh of your car by much as long as u put a 50 or less profile on. otherwise it starts to look abit high.

Alright sweeto i'll get a new front swaybar and when i swap the rims over i'll just get lower profile rubber that'll work alright. Does it cost much more for the lower profile rubber? Hey Brownie heard about your car that sucks balls man :'(

if u go 16's you WILL need 205/50's. cant go any wider , cant go a differnt profile.
change the swaybar yes. im an r31 owner with kyb's and lowered king. looks good. see 'Mattius project' in the project cars section for pics

there is not impossibles. I have 205/50 r16s on the front and 225/55 r16s on the back and im lowered abit and no gaurd mods. Fits with ease. Seen lowered r31s with 255s on the rear after some gaurd rollage.

I know skylines came with 14's - but the legal ruling is one inch higher and one inch wider than the biggest rims that car left the factory with. Meaning 1" both ways from the Skyline Silhouette or GTS rims.

A mate had a Sigma, and because he could state and prove that the Peter Wherrett Sigma came out with 15" rims, he got away with 16" rims at Vicroads.

Insert Quoteu can go watever siz e u want.

id check on that b4 u go sticking 19 inch rims on a mirage.

legally u can go one inch bigger ( i have heard they let 2 inch bigger through) but on my 16s it is actually illegal to go any smaller than 205s on the rear at the hieght of the rim on a car that weighs as much as my car needs a wider tyre otherwise its unsafe. according to transport sa

Whiteline would be the place to look for swaybars ...std front bar is 24mm thick the whiteline is 27mm, they also have a rear upgraded one and a strut brace is avaliable.

On my own car im running the upgraded front and rear sway bars, noathane bushes everywhere, a nismo strut brace and also bilstien coilover shocks/springs.
The car is a r31 skyline Ti turboed.  ;D

Good luck with your car, it will feel totally different to drive after the upgrades. ;)

according to the australian standards which are enforced by all road authorities in australia (i.e. queensland transport, vicroads, the rta) wheels cannot be more than 25mm (1") wider than the largest wheel fitted standard to that vehicle from the factory, the overall diameter of the rim with tyre fitted cannot exceed the overall diameter of the stock rims with tyres fitted by more than 15mm. this means that, the size is dependant on the diameter of the tyre, not the rim.

things like this arent dependant on a state by state basis as you could be defected as soon as you cross a border.

Base models had 14inch wheels,
Silhouette & Ti 15 inch
GTS/GTS2 16 inch

i have 205/50/R16s and they are tiny as. not enough rubber for me, altough they are on 7" up front(sidewalls are vertical) and 8" down back(tires are stretched). will get some 225/50s when these tires die. here in sa im pretty sure you can go 2" larger than the factory rim. width of the rim comes greatly down to offset as the track cannot be increased by more than 26mm. therefore, you can put 9" or 10" wheels on your car if they dont scrub, and the track is not increased by more than 26mm.
