yeah dudes, just installed my CAI with K&N pod, i took out all of the old intake and the resonator box, then i cut out a bit off the wall and have the pod in the space were the box was, then cut open a channel so air flow comes from under the car.

It aint a skyline, but itll sure take your excels out.

Pedders list all their stock on the net. They told me that they were sports ryder shocks, but when I got under there the other day whilst taking the motor out, they had a pedders comfort gas sticker on them. So I dont know if they are good or not, the springs look the perfect ride hieght and the car handles like its on rails.

Front Struts
8831R 8831R C/GAS SEALED STRUT
8831L 8831L C/GAS SEALED STRUT

Front Springs
2316R Sports Ryder Coil Spring RH
2316L Sports Ryder Coil Spring LH

Rear shocks
8832R 8832R C/GAS SEALED STRUT
8832L 8832L C/GAS SEALED STRUT

I didnt buy the rear springs but this is the part number.

anyway got gears out of a gtir pulsar as they are bigger then the bluebird. The bluebirds are only about 12mm think and the gtir's are 15mm.

You only need two tools: WD-40 and Duct Tape
If it doesn't move and should, use WD-40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use Duct Tape.

my understanding is that the bluebird, gtir, maxima and fwd ka24 gearboxes are all 50-series nissan gearboxes and have an identical gearset inside. and the way the gears slide onto the shafts you generally can't just shove wider gears onto them unless you go completely redesigning the gearbox internals. you can see that here from my old broken box: http://www.clubpoint.net/bluebird/Img_2588.jpg

as fun as rev limiter launches can be, they can get bloody expensive!

I guess I can include myself in here now, since I picked my U13 SSS up yesterday!

Name: Jeremy
Car: 1993 (Reg'd Feb 94) U13 SSS
Colour: Polar White
Trans: Manual
Owned Since: October 2005
Occupation: ISP work
ASL: 19, Male, Perth (Armadale)

The car started life in Queensland, then moved to Kalgoorlie, then Morley in the space of 1 year, and now it's mine!
I was a little sad to see the old Corsair go, but I was more than happy to say goodbye to the flatspot, leaky brake master cylinder, and high-speed wobble!

It seems to have the U13 Series 1 Rattle to it, which I'll have to investigate further.
Also it's obviously been left in the sun due to the slightly faded paint on the grille and the back.
Apart from that, it's in near perfect condition - everything works as it should

Pic: (this was the only photo I had to look at while I waited a whole week before I could go pick it up!

Nice choice mortz, looks great :)
You won't be disappointed, the U13s are great cars.
You don't see many Aus U13 SSS models in that colour.
Wonder what the deal is with the striping door protectors, must have been a factory option.

The U13 Series 1 rattle???

They don't look very factory. That strip is pretty standard stuff from alot of panel shops/automotive shops.

The U13 Series 1 rattle???

From http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=6923.0:
Quote
With the Series 1 bluebirds, there was a timing chain guide bolted into the head. This guide is the cause of  more than 90% of the top end rattles in series 1 bluebirds. the solution to this problem is to take the guide out completely!!!! Nissan had recognised this problem and the Series 2 motor's came from the factory with the guide already removed.
(thanks Greenbird)

At least that's all I hope it is  :-\

All this talk about stripping gears in the gearbox is annoying me, when my gearbox blew, all the gears were fine, it was the casing that exploded, whats up with that?

when my first gearbox broke i took two teeth off 2nd, and i imagine if i hammered the throttle afterwards it probably would have stripped the gear. 2nd time i put the output shaft (well, one half of it!) through the side of the case (it basically just punched a hole in the side of the case, didn't actually exit the casing).

a gearbox can fail in so many ways, and some people have a standard gearbox lasting fine behind 180rwkw and others dying with standard power. stupid things.

yeah its got a little bit of rubbing only with a full car though, looking at lowering it that may fix the problem or make it worse we will see i guess got to get a bit of money together first. Also if i amn keeping the car for a while i will look at going widebody and that will solve it. But yeah they are 30 profile may as well just put rubber bands on lol. The guys that put them on said when i replace the tyres i can go 35s maybe 40s to save a bit of money. But yeah i think it is all worth doesnt do anything for performance lol but i just want a cruiser so it works

NSW  Cruize? Is there a club in NSW? As for the SC i have some pics im trying to post of the car and Engine. It is a fairly basic setup, I removed all the aircon unit from the bracket to all the piping and AC cooler. The SC bracket needs minor alteration to fit up to the original AC brackets, its  all piping really, I just utilised what was there and made it all fit. I will try to get a parts list and i'll write up a manual for anyone that is interested and post that as well.

ANTRX has state spefic boards, members from each state organise cruise with fellow members from the same state. look at the link in my last post.

NSW dosnt have much U13 members, Last cruise I was the only attending U13 member so it would be nice to get a few more U13 members.

Welcome to ANTRX

The SSS's had leather gear knob, boot and steering wheel from factory. LX's just had vinyl/plastic/whatever it is, and i'm not too sure about the Ti's.

Thanks for the info. it doesn't have any pattern on top. only marks are the leather stitching.

-T3/TO4E 50trim 63a/r on a revhard manifold, Tial 38mm wastegate, Greddy BOV, Custom IC and SS exhaust

Guys wats a CAI????

its a cold airr intake
usually for na cars only the pipe for the intake is extended to just behind the bumper or somewhere it can suck in colder air than engine bay air

hey guys

some of you may notice my username from OCAU/valhalla, yeah im the same guy :P

Name: Sanjay
Car: 1993 Bluebird U13 LX
Colour: Metallic Maroon
Transmission: 5sp manual (wont drive an auto till im old and decrepit)
Owned Since: Uhh about a month ago. Sold off a massive POS 1997 TE magna advance (also manual) and bought this a week later. even though the U13 is 4 years older it feels like a gargantuan leap forward.
Kms: 225,000 but had a full rebuild at 210,000km at the cost of the previous owner ($2100!) which i have full receipts for. as such it drives much more nicely than the odo would say
ASL: 17 (18 in a week :D), Adelaide, Male

here it is:

havent driven her for about a week thanks to having my wisdom teeth pulled out at the whim of an angsty dental surgeon :(

first glance tells me theres some really good info on this site about the U13 series. have a lot of reading to do while i recover from my aforementioned surgery. :)

Lovely car, are you going to lower it ? it looks weird in that photo.
I wish my rebuild would only cost that much.

Owned Since: Uhh about a month ago. Sold off a massive POS 1997 TE magna advance (also manual) and bought this a week later. even though the U13 is 4 years older it feels like a gargantuan leap forward.

I second that, missinbits really screwed up the magna.

well, when i put the 17s on i thought too "hmm thats odd" seeing as it had a massive gap in the wheel arches there.

but im not sure how much lowering it would cost. keep in mind i only paid $2000 for this (woman seller was going overseas in a week, i used both of these factors - gender and travelling constraints - to screw her on price).

this is what my old magna looked like:

looks quite nice you say, whats the problem?
3 engine leaks
clutch was rooted (and quoted at about $1000 to replace with a heavy duty one + labour)
handbrake totally useless as rear brake shoes were worn to the metal and the cable was stretched to the last fibre (quoted at $500 to get new shoes + cable)
stereo didnt work properly (not a big deal :p)
one of the brake lights didnt work

when i bought it it had these problems that i forked out over $1000 in total to fix:
tyres down to the metal bands (turned out it was running really bad camber and although the wheels looked fine from the outside they were fucked)
leak in petrol tank (needed new tank at cost of $650 inc installation)
paint in a really bad way - thankfully a good cut + polish sorted that at $120

when id just spent $4000 on my first car i didnt appreciate having to fork out an extra 20% of the purchase price to get it to a standard that didnt include a working handbrake...clutch issues became apparent a few months later. managed to sell it to $4000 to some unsuspecting moron...just like i was when i bought it i suppose.

anywho, moving on - havent had to spend a cent on the bluey apart from $10 for an oil filter, $10 for an air filter and $29 for some nissan 7.5w50 oil :D

Hi Everyone,  I'm just getting started.  Bought my U13 a few weeks ago and want to start improving a few things.  Does anyone know where to get different parts like non-standard lights etc in Brisbane?
Thanks

not too much you can get from here in australia, your best bet is going on ebay.com and searching for nissan altima 94 the bluebird was renamed the altima for the yanks, they have smoke head lights and all the other stuff hope this helps!

KM's - 121 000

Was a repairable write off so we had to cut it in half and weld a different half cut onto it, was a fairly big job. Had been sitting for 7 years so a lot of the plastic in the car has perished.

Hi Blair here from Invercargill, New Zealand

1996 Bluebird SE
SR20DE Manual
brought it with 60,000km now 110,000
CAI, Alarm, tints, Sony head unit, 2x pioneer amps, Infinity front splits, Pioneer 4-way 6x9's, Pioneer 1000W sub
More mods to come in the future but money always hinders this.
gotta luv the bluebirds, reliable, economical and surprisingly quick.

Been on a while so

David Hitch   Australian living in the uk
1991 bluebird sss manual
sr20det  standard
Surprisingly slow compared to the other cars that I have and also impossible to get parts for or insured on here in the uk
also hard to get things like window switches on the net mainly due to being mucked around unlike getting parts for other cars.

Car is 100% factory, stock radio, etc etc.  Been smooth as silk since I got it, no issues other than a leaking taillight filling the boot with water.  Great car to drive and got enough get up and go for me.  My daily drive :)  Always returns under 8 litres to 100km as well, most of the time 7.5 or less :)

just search nissan altima 93. However keep in mind that these headlights are configured to be used in nissan altimas which is the american version of the nissan bluebird. Just take them to your autoelectrician and they can rewire your headlights so they fit :D  CHEERS !!!!

Hi, I'm new here and I like Nissans, am I at the right place?

So, I'm finally out of my last ride and into my new ride, my much loved Attesa.
Introduction:

Name: Matt
Car: 1991 Bluebird U13 SSS Attesa
Colour: Dark Green
Trans: Manual
Owned Since: March 2011
KM: 190km
Occupation: Market Researcher
ASL: 29 / M / Adelaide
Mods: Yeah, she be stock. Know her last 7year history personally - no mods, just maintenance. Previous history - No idea, she was still in Japan... looks stock as though in every regard, minus the kimono. She makes a good cup of coffee... spill all down your front. Am yet to name her. She needs a little TLC and I'm just the bowerbird.
Mods to come: First - tend to anything that isn't working correctly like the tacho amongst other things.
Then:
 - I always like to know that I can stop before I get the get go - so a brake upgrade is in order.
 - Upgrade security system coz when I'm done you'd be stupid not to want it.
 - Suspension & sway bars.
 - Cooling system & air intake.
 - Mandrel bent exhaust & strut brace.
 - Upgrade turbo & gauges (tastefully), and anything else you need to do at this time.
 - Wheels and tyres.
 - cosmetics such as window tinting, fluffy dice(Nawt!) etc.
 - paint job eventually(not a priority).

Of course any suggestions on any, or all of these proposed upgrade/mods would be appreciated as I am keen to expand my knowledge of all things SSS Attesa, as sadly I am a noob!

Respect,
Matt

Name: Richard
Car: 1991 Bluebird U13 SSS Attesa
Colour: Metallic charcoal
Trans: Manual
Extras: Factory electric sunroof. No HUD
Owned for a couple of years
ASL:34/M/Dandenong, Melbourne

Mods:
Tinted windows, boost guage
Hi-flowed stock turbo, larger compressor wheel, 15psi
EMS Dual Sport ECU, standalone, I think. Maps, no AFM, XF Ghia idle control
TX5 intercooler
CES Racing ceramic coated twin dump pipe, 3” exhaust all the way, good cat
GFB atomic boost controller
Hi-flowed injectors
K&N pod filter, custom piping, isolated in engine bay
Malpassi regulator, Walbro in-tank pump, oil catch can
Sports suspension, rear sway bar, camber kit
Exeddy HD Clutch
Alpine head unit, mb Quart splits, Pioneer 69's. Amps n Subs plug n play in boot.

Future mods:
Turbo: Something like a 2871 with external actuator but actually designed for the housing it's in, like the equivalent billet turbo.
ECU: maybe go Nistune, if current set-up piggy-backing. If not, maybe go all out on a standalone. EMS, if it saves wiring hassles.
Cams: wouldn't mind getting a custom grind based on all my mods. Otherwise HKS, Tomei or JWT drop-ins.
Brakes: biggest possible.
Gearbox: maybe something from a skyline. A PPG job would be nice, but then again, so would a Tomei Genesis/Derive complete engine.
Suspension: Lowrider/Hydraulic adjustable. strut brace.
Body:Bi-Xenon headlights, maybe rear suicide doors for something different. Remove spoiler?
Tyres: Hi-performance wet weather tyres.
And maybe a low-HP NOS kit.
Media: Double DIN navigation/entertainment centre. Eclipse, Kenwood. And SQ speaker set-up.
Paint: If i had to, would prob go a shade of non-metallic grey, high gloss. like on some lambos.
Interior: Um, baby blue velour/suede, thick carpets, sound deadening. Steering wheel, gearknob.
Greddy Intake plenum?
Tow bar.

lol my RB26DETT transplant sits longitudinally...

but seriously, it seems that my correspondent at PPG is as familiar with my car as i am. i'm passing him the buck anyway. perhaps he is talking about the internals?

basically, he was recommending looking at skyline gearboxes as a cheaper alternative to PPG/PAR sets as a next-step-up strengthening mod.

not sure if this idea is worthy of it's own thread as i have not heard anyone else mention this, nor read about it online.

so far, my research in this department has peaked at "SR20DET ATTESA 'boxes are model no. 50A" and "Nissan doesn't over-engineer their gearboxes so large power increases may cause the box to be labeled 'Achilles heel' ".

so when this 'skyline box' spanner is thrown in the works by a gearbox professional, i don't even think about the logistics, just start dreaming about how one day i can advertise the car as having a GTR gearbox!

Luke thanks for pinching me, but please tell me it's not just a dream!

My best advice is:

One day you will come to realise your driving around in a 20 year old Nissan that was never designed to be fast. I Strongly suggest you don't waste your money on it. 15 years ago, these cars would have been a cool project, not any more.

Yeh. Hate to say it but I'm with Luke. I've got the PAR gearset. And while it is freaking awesome, I'm at a stage now where I kind of regret spending the cash on it.

That being said if I was loaded and not a struggling 22 year old student I would probably go crazy on it and make it a track car.

As for the 'skyline box' I can't see that ever working. While it's still the attesa system it's a totally different setup. It may be easier to say you have a pulsar GTiR (which uses the same gearbox as the u13) as most people are a lot more familiar with them.

Thanks Luke and JelloBello

Yes, true, no car should be over-invested in, even though this model is rare and quirky.

And the gearbox, yeah, the bluebirds have a 'fwd-based' 4wd system as far as i know. shame there are no common or easy 'in-between' stages as far as gearbox improvements are concerned. I wonder if people sell second-hand PAR/PPG gearsets/boxes... might be the solution.

Before I stop over-investing in the ATTESA, I really want to see what it's like with a nice turbo and ECU. But I can tell that could be dangerous, when I see products from DTAfast that would make me want to take full advantage of all features, thus further investing in crazy things like a row of secondary injectors etc.

I think your missing the point. Why the hell would you need a second row of injectors? If you want a quick bluebird, buy mine... I'll save you the trouble of finding out the hard way.

These cars have a very limited potential. Everything needs to upgraded on them. Have a look at Evo's and STi's. They have all the suspension and brake setups on them, and their engines and gearboxes can take the punishment. If you want something different that is actually a high performance car... have a look at the Mazda MPS cars... lots of potential.

i like the sr20DET's reported potential and that of turbo cars in general.
the ABS, traction control and 4wd of the attesa give the impression of control, safety and 'harness-ability', further enhancing 'potential' appeal.

if i did ever have the money and necessity to purchase a newer car, then given my likes, the evo X might be a goer, but so might a nissan juke. normally, there would be a slight bit of shame in going the direction of the evo/sti (for a number of reasons), however i love that 'galant' look, which looks best on vr4/legnum: another car i would go for before going brand new. the legnum especially, as i can sleep in the back if i'm in the city and intoxicated or tired.

the attesa has everything i need, plus a conservative guise. it's certainly fast enough (but hey, who doesn't like a bit of extra g-force?).
i'm using it to learn about about cars and engines - come from a family of mechanics and engineers and still don't even do my own oil changes, yet day dreams of the ultimate rebuild get me through the day.

the mazda mps is awesome. i am keeping a lookout for newer cars in the 4 cyl turbo category. for a while i thought the configuration was becoming obsolete or unappealing to manufacturers, and that vvt and electricity were taking over. until the golf r arrived.

still, for less money, i can experience the x-trail gt. it might be getting old, it might be expensive to repair, but 'sr20vet' just sounds like fun. and again, in a weird or unlikely body.

for now it's attesa ftw. maybe an x-trail gt next. and, i'm sure that by the time i can afford a new car, there will be so many amazing options available. there already are and they're only gonna get better. i have the meanwhile to catch up with technology by practicing on the outdated type. the potential of my car and any other car have the exact same limit on potential at the moment, that being my funds!

a turbo here and a cam there are relatively small outlays requiring no loans so for now, i'll be continuing to spread the gospels of 'don't judge a book' and 'it's what's on the inside that counts', in my granny-mobile!

one question: if everything DOES get upgraded on one of these, doesn't that make it kind of like a new, improved car? extending the lifespan and lowering its rate of deterioration? especially given that there is no current intention of ever selling the vehicle

Hi
Mine is a '94 SSS SR20det Blacktop Attesa. I've invested in upgrades over the past 2yrs and it had its first car show entry last weekend. It's also being showed in Street Car Magazine.

I upgraded the turbo to a G28, along with other mechanical upgrades. A new paint job. It still has the original ECU which was recently re-tuned to stream-line performance. It goes like a shower-of-shit. They are eye-candy cars, lots of fun and very rewarding.

Enjoy your new Attesa.  :)

Well done.  You should have said something, i would have gone for a look, although i did not remember until the Sunday arvo that it was on.  You know you will have to show some pics now.  Who did you end up getting to work on it?

Hi Bruce

I haven't been on here for a long time. The car show was quiet compared to Ingham in the past years.

All the mods and paint etc were done by John...All Paint & Body Kit Solutions.

I'd add some pics but can't remember how to do that here.

Hey Luke....limited potential?

Yeah okay, manual gearbox sus. Mine's auto. Same trans as behind RB25. Strong as! 2500stall. Rest of mods make them go. Don't cost much, but mine's been dumped 2" with larger dia coils, big front/rear bars. As far as stop-power....slotted rotors all round with bendix comp pads. Corners and stops as well as goes. 13sec flat. STI & Evo...hmmmm   :)

Yep, SR's have good potential, and the gearboxes arent as weak as people make them out to be. But things like the viscous diffs, small wheel guards, 4 stub hubs mean that it's a bitch to get it to go properly. To think that because it has an SR and it's all wheel drive puts it in the same category as an evo or sti is to drastically underestimate how much better they are.

You will find it difficult to make a Bluebird go as good as an evo for less than what it would have cost you to just buy the evo.

You're probably right about the cost effectiveness between the cars. I guess it depends on how far you want to go. For instance, my car has 200kw at the wheels and rips the pants off the likes of SS's, subarus, etc. Sure you can have 600hp at the wheels, but for what you can do with it...
For the work thats been done to the car, I'm more then happy with it. It's a reliable fast car. It's a sleeper with surprising power. I don't need to be a Ken Block.
The lowered springs does tend to make it a rough ride round town, but its road-hugging safe. The only thing I'd look at upgrading is the twinspot brakes.

My car has flared guards and can take big rubber. We aren't real sure if this was specific to this import. The other thing is....Japan killed the S15/SR20det's because of the astringent emmission laws...shame  :(

I don't use the Bluey for corners. It's all highway, freeway and lights applications.

i prefer corner speed more fun

I hear ya, slim, it's just that i never get to go out to a track and i just can't picture any roads where i could take advantage of high-speed cornering ability. unless i'm in a getaway vehicle. the straight line stuff can be done pretty safely.

so the point was that the bluey is perfect for my purposes. i'd never get to the point where i'd feel limited by it's ability. plus imho it's better looking than evo's and wrx's not to mention much much more of a sleeper, which you couldn't turn the other two into without affecting their performance drastically. eg. getting rid of the ugly bonnet scoops, putting on conservative wheels. etc.

oh yeah, then there's unique, luxurious and surprising.

Edit: Luke - you were right about the (realistic) potential and how certain cars are built for certain purposes. I get the impression that the SR20DET and Atessa shoe-horns were an after-thought just to fill a market gap for Nissan. All my dreams were in the Bluebird, and the bubble-bursting I was resisting occurred anyway... The car sits in my garage in need of a transfer case, hoping that it will be one day valuable! Plenty of modern day sleepers around nowadays anyway that are also nicer to the environment...
