I think what gets me, especially when it comes to measuring people's height, is when was the last time you came across someone 30 years old or younger who didn't know what 203cm was? Fair enough older people who grew up with it using it, but honestly, if you grew up when the metric system was in place, then use it. Let the old people do the converting

I've never understood why horses have a totally different measuring system just for their height???
Any horse people here to explain that one?

I am a horse person in more ways than 1 and i can tell you that 1 hand is about 4 inch or 100mm or about the width of 1 hand

why this is I have no idea but I have a big stick here which we use to measure the hight of a horse from the withers to the ground.

I can check the horse care books for the answer but I am too lazy for that.

why horses are measured in hands;

The origin of measuring a horse this way is very old, but easy to understand. In days long ago people did not have the common measuring devices (like tape measures, etc.) that we do today. To measure a horse, they used what was handy:Their hands. At various times in history and in different locales a "hand" was defined as the width of a person's hand using the fingers only, the width of a person's hand using the fingers and the thumb, the height of a clenched fist, and possibly others. Somewhere along the way, the measuring unit of a hand was standardized to mean four inches. Though the origins are ancient, a hand is still the unit of measurement for horses that modern horse owners use today.

I'm getting too old to be checking out girls in school uniform. Just dont impress me much now that theres at least 7 years difference. Stangely enough I do find myself occasionally checking out what I guess as a hot 32 year old.
