Moving to Brisbane
« on: Oct 25, 2008, 10:25PM »
Wasn't sure where to put this topic, but Off-Topic seemed the place least likely to have it moved elsewhere from.

I'll be moving to Brisbane at the end of next year, and the issue of my car is causing a bit of concern. I would really really like to NOT have to make the drive from Perth to Brisbane, especially since at this stage it's looking like I'd have to make the entire journey by myself with no one to swap driving shifts with.

The other options I've thought of are:

Getting the car trucked there. This doesn't seem like a good idea since it'd cost about $1000 and that doesn't seem worth it for a car I could probably only sell for $2000.

Sell the car here and buy another one once I've moved. This doesn't seem like a good idea either since I bought it for $4750 but I doubt I could sell for much more than $2000, so I certainly wouldn't be able to buy a car for $2k that's in as good nick as the one I have now.

Anyone else have advice for moving interstate, particularly with regards to taking your car with you?

Wouldn't it cost almost $1k to drive there anyway? all the fuel, food, time, accommodation and if something breaks on the car?

Yeah, a few people have been telling me that as well.  :-\

I was just making a rough estimate based on what I've read on here about people having cars sent across the country. I thought your U13 was about $1k to get trucked here?

Put it up for sale, fly over and buy another car over there.

You'll have to pay to put the car in QLD rego and all that shit, for a 2k car F it.

Do you have an idea how much that is? I had a look on the Qld Transport website but couldn't find anything specific.

it doesnt cost much at all.. rego is about $540 for the year, if the car is in your name already, you never used to have to get an rwc, but now you do :( but that should be ok.. other than that, fill out a few forms and you're done

http://www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/Registration/Motor_vehicles/

Quote
Before you can move your vehicle from its place of purchase or from where it is currently garaged, you must:

    * Complete a Vehicle Registration Application form (F3518). This form is also available at your local Queensland Transport customer service centre.
    * Organise a compulsory third party insurance certificate for the vehicle through a licensed insurer.
    * If your vehicle was registered interstate and registration has expired, remove the plates and complete the above.
    * If your vehicle was registered interstate and registration is still current, complete the vehicle registration application form. You can nominate your compulsory third party insurer on your application form. When registration fees are paid, this will include the compulsory third party premium.
Note: The registered operator of an interstate vehicle is responsible for contacting the relevant interstate authority for any refund and cancellation requirements.

Once you have done this, you can legally take your unregistered vehicle directly to:

    * an approved inspection station to obtain a safety certificate
    * an authorised gas installer to obtain a gas certificate (if your vehicle runs on gas or has gas fittings/systems).
Note: An exemption can be obtained from the Department of Mines and Energy if you are unable to obtain a gas certificate because no one is authorised to issue gas inspection certificates within a reasonable distance of your residence. Additional information and exemption forms can be obtained at the Department of Mines and Energy

Permanently, I think.

Thanks for that, noss. chris' post made me think there was some sort of fee on top of the cost of rego to get Qld licence plates or something.  :-\
