p-platers driving nice cars
« on: Mar 11, 2008, 03:54PM »
After driving out of my area a fair bit recently, I've started to notice it..

How the fuck do they do it?

I'm talking a GREEN p-plater driving a e46 m3 and his not old either, he was a young bastard with 2 girls in the back seat and his best mate in the passenger.  That's not it though, the amount of "sex spec" bmw's, audi's, s2k's, blah blah..

I mean, i've been asked if i do "drugs" before, but it was only from some kid who had no ambition to do anything and thought all the mods were expensive when they really arn't...

but FFS, i'd do anything to own a e46 m3 at this age!

i noticed that a lot in melbourne, lots of money being thrown around, p-platers driving mercs & bimmers and hsv's (not old ones, new ones) a lot of the time its parents buying the kids cars for getting into/completing uni, or just rich bastards buying their kids cars for their 18th or 21st or whatever.

i dont really understand either.. some people have a perspective on money, others dont. someone i know their father in-law bought their wife a brand new 5 series bmw because 'oh i cant stand seeing you drive around in a 5yr old bmw honey' they're a couple in their mid 30's and they're quite well off, very well off in fact, they could have afforded the car themselves, but yeh.. the father was just like 'meh, whatever, money is nothing'

i know the age bracket they're in isnt the same you're talking about, but thats what i've seen first hand, and obviously this girl has had cars bought for her in the past. at least her dad has good taste :P

This isn't quite in the same league of cash, but someone I knew in high school had their dad give them $10,000 for a new car as a reward for not crashing during their first year of P-plates. He bought a Soarer.  ::)

I personally believe that working your arse off to earn something you know you created from blood, sweat and tears is the the best feeling.

Hence why most of us on this site are dedicated to doing that and not going out and spending tens of thousands on your FIRST car...
I would say majority of P platers do hit something in their first two years. I know that Ive hit a few things in my time. Why bother?

-sigh-

I wish my parents bought me a McLaren F1 GTR as my first car...I'd be happy with them paying for the rest of the KA26 to be finished* =]

So very true. When you work for the money you feel proud of your car.

I reckon you're right chris, you see heaps of P platers with crazy cars now....all from the following I think:
-drugs
-midget porn
-hard work (pfft)
-parents

A 20yr old at work stupidly just got at 49,000 loan for a 3.8L Merc. Its about a 2000 modelish.

But fuck me, the repayments, servicing. Its just so stupid. Shes had in 1-2 months and already she nearly crashed because the brakes went on it and now shes up for big money to fix them.

I am fixing mums struts atm and for aftermarket ones im looking at over $200 a strut not including labor.

Had a guy at school got a Sylvia for his 16th (big deal 7 years ago).  He crashed that the first month of his P's.  so the parents got him a WRX... again written off within the year  ::)  not sure if the parents figured out their son is a moron, you would think they would say "buy your own bloody car next time".

On the other side of the argument... parents kids buy/contribute to newer cars so their kids can be safer... our cars with no ABS, no airbags = not as safe.  And with the popularity of big heavy SUV's driven by midgets, drug dealers, pornstars, spoilt kids etc... I do see the value of my kids having something modern with added safety.  maybe BMW is a bit fancy and out of budget though, late 90's would be fine.

supra and a skyline is achievable imo for our age...

if i saved what i spent on my previous cars (honda and nissan) i could be driving around in one.. 15k isn't hard to save in the space of 3-4 years, remember most of us start saving for our cars in yr10, i didn't really.. i was pumped for the trx, then i got the modifying bug lol.

My brother did about 6 months worth of ridiculous o/t, nightshift & working at other clinics on his RDO's (radiographer) to buy his DC2R, whilst it's an awesome car, he should have put that money toward a house deposit like i did when i was his age.

My wife's cousin, paid $40k, in cash, for a '06 RX8 about 3 months ago. He's 22, he'd been saving since he started FT work at 17. Insanity. Nice car, but, insanity.

so, much for these new p plate laws stopping turbos and such. these rich parents would of bribed the cops not to take there kids cars after they paid so much for them.
i dont know wat is the go, these rich kids act to impress other guys and girls but in retrospect we only think there tossers and the parents  have got to much money by wasting it on a car that the kid will only just screw up in a couple of months anyhow.
stupid if u ask me, how bout working to obtainin your goals instead of mooching off the parents.

I do see the value of my kids having something modern with added safety.  maybe BMW is a bit fancy and out of budget though, late 90's would be fine.

But then there's the issue of moral hazard - if the kiddies know their parents will buy them a nice new car, rather than having to save up for ages themselves, will they act more recklessly and not be as careful a driver as they might otherwise be?  Safety is irrelevant if you never crash the car.

Insanity. Nice car, but, insanity.

You know, I could deal with the purchase price.  If you keep the car for years, you're able to diffuse that cost over a long period, so it doesn't seem quite as bad.  For me, it's the increased costs associated with the car's value - servicing, and particularly insurance, probably tyres, and then there's the cost of protecting that value etc.  These costs are just more, regardless of how long you keep the car.  This is the sort of thing that would stop me from putting money into the TRX, because I don't want to bear higher annual costs for the indefinite future.

Rotaries are good engines, but they need to be built right, when they do they fly.

Yeah, but im sure you didn't have plates on it like, DSXC1 or somefucking gay crap like that did you? Most of these cars I mentioned before have custom plates on it that a mum wouldn't drive with lol.

I do drive around in a del-sol crx now, it gets abit of attention but it's not like their expensive anyway.

well dont i feel bad driving my BMW right now...

a little added help from parents is alright... in my situation it was either keep spending money repairing an old bomb or buy a new car (with a little help) and start saving that money for something productive..

right now the best place to get money is to work in the mines.

you can start at age 16 as a apprentice electician, be earning roughly $700ow♦ (as an apprentice) with no way to spend it because you're living at the mines.

once you're actually an electrician you're on something more like 2000pw at age 21.

either that or join the navy, the pay there is pretty good if you work hard, and there's no shops out at sea.

15k or 20k really isn't that much for a car  :-\

most of this thread seems like tall poppy syndrome, If I'm stinking rich of course I'm going to want to have my kids well off too. I would like to think that they would work hard for it... but I wouldn't want them in an unsafe car if I had a choice. I'd probably make them get an Audi or a VW before I got them a jap import though..

who am I kidding I'd let them have it if I could drive it  ;D

I think I mentioned this in another thread, but I'm fine with P-platers having nice cars and having their parents buy it for them.

It's when the kid has proven themselves to be irresponsible by crashing the first car that mommy bought them, but the parents still buy them another expensive (and fast) car. That's when you have a real problem.

The rest of the time it's just me being jealous of people having nice cars. :P

lol yeh, its all about the style when you drive an s2k.

hey it depends who's driving! here in this city alot of cough "dirty [i seem to suffer from tourettes]s" drive del sols and wreck the whole image of them, I like them but they are tarnished by these minority of boys that like to do them up in a way that makes me throw up. But meh, same could be said with s2k's.

i haven't seen a stock s2k in about a year now.

all the ones around here have horrible 22inch dish rims.

Its a shame 'cause I used to really like s2k's but now I think they're a bit meh

Been in an E55 AMG Merc?  I've been driving one on loan here for the last two weeks.

Homer!  What have you done to the car?  I don't think it had broken axles before.

Before!  Before!  You're living in the past, Marge.  Quit living in the past.

What, I never said I didn't like it asshat! :P

At least I don't think I did... but if I did, then I'm the asshat.
