SR20 Knock Sensor on U13 Attesa
« on: May 25, 2006, 05:24PM »
I downloaded the ECU codes and there is still one fault.  It is the knock sensor circuit.  It appears the knock sensor on the newly swapped engine is faulty or there is a bad connection.  On the old engine, the knock sensor worked but only after it was removed from the engine and the corrosion was clean out.  Now the question I ask is what is the easiest way to replace the knock sensor?  It currently resides directly under the intake manfold between the second and third intake.  It is in a very awkward and unaccessible position.  Any tips or tricks from anyone who has replaced this sensor would be mucly appreciated.

There was a thread regarding this on the Yahoo Attesa group.  Apparentely a quick fix is to put a resistor in the knock sensor wire, this allows it to work while you decide how best to change it

Ive done a fair bit of fidling with this on my car. Easiest way to get to it is totake the drivers side wheel off and reach through the hole where the steering rack comes through.

or do yourself a favour, and if you haven't already replaced all the coolant hoses on the back of the engine, do it all in one go. take the plenum and intake runners off and it's all easily accessible.

it's not ultra easy, hardest bit being the bolts down the drivers side of the plenum and the bracket at the back of the plenum, but like i said it may be worth it.

*digs up from the grave*

I just got a consult interface today and it spat out the knock sensor error  :(

as well as this I've been looking over the logs and the ecu has been retarding the timing something chronic and running extremely rich... this explains my cars lack of oomph since a few days after i got it. I assume the knock sensor has been faulty for quite some time now, as my fuel eccon. has been shithouse at best.

so, will i need to find a replacement knock sensor or can I clean/attempt to repair the current one? Also i've read about the resistor action in the yahoo group, would this really be wise in the event that the car does start pinging?

bah, I'll sus out where the sensor is 2morrow morning (too dark now) and go from there.

The wire could just be off it, you will find it has a plug on the knock sensor, then about a foot of cable, then another plug that joins it to the loom. Like I said earlier, the only way to reach it is to take the drivers side wheel off and get to it from there. You may have to dislocate your shoulder :P

Well i spent a good hour and a half this morning trying to find the god damn knock sensor - with no luck. I tried everything but my hands/arms are too big  >:(

So the plan now is to wire in a resistor and see if it makes a difference to power/fuel econ. and if it does i'll take it to my mechanic with a replacement sensor and tell him too do it.

FYI, I could only get if off if the engine was out.  Even if you can find it, you then need to fit a tool in there to unbolt it.  It really is a pain.  I just ignored it but my economy sucks right down to 400-450 km to a tank.

I'm very lucky to get 350 out of a tank, and with the price of 98ron petrol these days anything that will make that number a lot better and have a positive impact on performance is worth the effort. I've got the car booked in for Friday, my mechanic's going to trying cleaning out the connectors etc. and if that has no effect then I'm going to source a knock sensor myself (Direct from Nissan = ripoff). Never got around to wiring in a resistor - been too busy with school crap.

Also, for future reference here's a thread that i found very informative:

Theres enough room in there to swing a spanner. I found it fairly easy to find, put your hand through the steering hole and reach upwards, feel along the side of the block for wires and stuff. I found that the sensor was right at the end of my reach, without being uncomfortable, I mean, I didnt have to stretch for it, it was just right at the end. Its either a 12 or 13mm spanner and if you use a short one, you have no trouble swinging it enough to get it undone. :) either that or take it to a mechanic.

hehe luke, i know where it should be but my arms are just simply too big to go shoulder deep into the hole where the steering rack/tie rods comes through (I'm just big boned okay :P), the furthest i can reach is some random metal cylinder thing ~ under the 3rd and 4th intakes. I've tried squeezing in there for a total of what must be 3 hours now and I'm sick of it.

The metal cylinder you taking about I think would be the starter motor, A couple of wires going to the back of it??? The knock sensor is back closer to you and up a little higher, somewhere between 1 and 2 but I think closer to 2.
