Low speed fan earth point
« on: Mar 19, 2011, 10:23PM »
Back from the dead - the old pinny's still kciking BUT

my low speed fan circuit is stuffed - No continuity on earth

does anyone know where the earth point (to body) is for this circuit?

2/ If I just end up just jumpering this earth (bodge) to the body - can anyone see any issues?

Realy don't want to unwrap and trace the engine harness - If I can help it.

ps the workshop manual don't help.

Anywhere on the body gets back to earth eventually. Just make sure you put it out of the way of moving parts and places where sticks and other road debris can knock it out.

Ta for reply

Just spent most of the day changing that 4inch piece of radiator hose under(almost) the inlet manifold - waht a pita.

re: the low speed fan, as I've cleaned the wires a bit the -ve(?) for the low speed circuit, is black with a white stripe - not so comfortable earthing it now, does anyone know where it goes (not the fan end obviously)

That, I can't help with. I had an R31, not a U12. And I don't even have that anymore to check on... The Mrs. taught it to surf.

Both fans are high and low speed, ie: they both run at different speeds at the same time.

On the fan's plug there are 4 wires, two are earths and two are for speeds, high and low. There are pics around here somewhere, I just can't find them at the moment.

correction : the black (with white stripe) wire is part of the high speed circuit - it goes to earth - when the brown relay is energised.

when I jumper the power on my low speed circuit - fans work - so my issue is somewhere in the ecu/trigger circuit

- as my relay and thermo sensor test good -but will retest again :(

maybe I'll just wire in a manual switch

FIXED - new(ish) temp sensor - also the fact I've been unplugging/ replugging ecu connectors - may have also helped.

The new sensor only reads approx 10 ohms less than the old one (I co tested them)- but that was enough to stop the fans kicking in.
