Worth a rebuild or?
« on: May 12, 2008, 02:52AM »
hey guys, my bluey is at 305,000km, ive done a bit of work on it, including new clutch, fuel pump, fuel filter, some other random junk. Now i dunno but it seems when i pop her into gear sometimes and take off its hard to explain but it feels like theres some "give" and it kind of slaps into gear.. i dunno. a nyway

me and the mrs have a bub on the way in sept, and i want a reliable enough car to last us at least 3yrs or so, and i love my bluey, however there are some concerns i have. 1: my pain work is totally shot, its scratched, chiped and flaking off everywhere, if i kept it id need a respray of some kind.
2: the engine..i would probably need an engine rebuild.
3: gearbox, i dunno how much a gearbox rebuild would cost
4: im in for new CVs and possibly some other stuff in the front end to do with the wheels (technical jumbo talk lol)

questions are, Is it worth fixing all this crap up and will it last the distants after that, or am i better off buying another car for 5-6k to last me 5 or so yrs.

If its worth a rebuild, Where in nsw is a place that does a good job and on average what am i looking at for it.

What would you guys do, i dont need performance, i need reliability. i love to drive the blue and its perfect size etc for the new family, but i need it to last me 3yrs or so. 305,000k. i dont know but im pretty sure the gearbox is original.

Would u guys buy a new car (what can i get thats good for 5-6k  tho?!?!) or is it worth fixing up the bluey to keep? like seriously without defending nissan to the death lol.

cheers guys, some input would be great on any matter here. ta

If you go and get all the rebuilds done on engine and gearbox etc, you then know that the car will most likely be reliable, as its all new. Whereas if you take your 5-6k and buy another car, whats to say that one isnt going to fuck up in 6 months time?

A paint job isnt a necessity, especially when your kid is on the way. Just get all the necessities done to keep the car rolling in one piece, eg engine, gearbox, CV's etc.

Sell it, Youll spend more on it than what its worth. If its done that many Ks shit will keep braking. If you like the bluebirds just sell it for what you can and buy anotherone thats done less Ks, true you dont know what condition its in but you can gererally tell how well its been looked after, especially if its a private sale. Are we talking about a U13 here?

You cant really say that fixing a CV is easy and cheap, and insinuate that an engine and gearbox would be the same, cos it just isn't gunna be. Jason is right, sell the car you have, get what you can, and pick up another U13 with less K's on it, makes sence to me.

I think they are more so stating that he has listed CV's as major repairs, when in reality they arent.

My point was that if it needs doing that bad, do it, cos its not expensive.

Sell it and buy one with less km on the clock. Cut the loss and look for somthing with 100-160,000 km on the clock that still has 2-3 years without majors.
Something like this:
Code: [Select]
http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars/private/NISSAN/BLUEBIRD/details.aspx?__sid=1199C36BF8DB&Cr=7&__Ns=pCar_Odometer_Single%7C0%7C%7CpCar_PrivateSpecialFlag_Int32%7C1%7C%7CpCar_ImageCount_Int32%7C1&State=All%20States&distance=25&silo=1003&seot=0&__Nne=20&Model=BLUEBIRD&R=5734238&__N=4294963846%200%20834%20285%20257%204294966599&trecs=42&Make=NISSAN&state_id=0&sort_type=8
You could sell ur car for $3000ish and buy another one with 1/2 as many km on the clock for $5000ish. 2 grand for an a1 car is just abit more than you'd spend on a gearbox rebuild

Guess ill sell it for what i can and get a newer car, id love another bluebird but if im going to buy another car im not going for anything older than a 2000 model car, so it rules out blueys. i might look at a 03 pulsar or a 01 maxima or something.

cheers guys

PS that car in the link is turbo and rubbish to me, i need a family car not a turbo 4 =p

Sorry, my bad. I copied the wrong link. I dont think u are going to find a quality 2000+ model car for under 10g. Maxima maybe but with alot of km on it. Pulsars are arguably not family cars as they are 2 small and dont have any grunt.

Maybe a imprezer or liberty? Or u can do the token family car and buy a camery or a tarago.

Or the super dad and buy a stagea

Pfft. Just cos it has a turbo doesnt mean it isn't a family car. Falcons and Commodores all come out with more power than that now. Dont think they arent economical either, I can get down to 6L per 100km in my car if I drive it right. And Ashman is right, I dont think your gunna get a decent 2000+ model car for the money you are looking at. If a car has done a certain amount of K's then that would be what I guage it's condition by, not its age.

im also on my P's too =p

Im actually thinking of buying a nice condition bluey with like 120,000km or so on it
cause i love the bluey. But still tossing up ideas. people wanna charge too much for blueys. 8k for a stock SSS with 140,000km. ugh

Maybe an old school bluey from a grandma?
Parts are more common and theyre good little cars.
If you get one in good nik and maintain it - itd be a good car.
