Air Filter
« on: Oct 8, 2002, 01:58AM »
Hey guys, I'm looking at getting a new air filter for my car. I saw a K&N one for $105 at Super Cheap Auto. I know lots of you have them, so what's the deal with performance and economy with a K&N filter???

"its a good starting point" the engine breathes better and a few horsepower can be gained - I imagine not many would have any figures from a dyno though.

You should notice increased efficiency - the most economical part is that a K+N will last you a long time. I have had mine for 4 years at least and still going strong, thats about 70,000kms of use. It will also be of use if you add a cold air setup later.

I boucht I Redline pod.  First I thought it was my imagination that I gained a bit more power.  But after havin a play on a dyno.. i went from 84kW to 88kW.  Don't ask me how.  The guys that done the run for me asked me the same thing.  But.. there is a negative side to this.. my fuel economy went down da drain.

I suppose it's cause of the sound I just take off really hard.  But my pod is gaurantedd for 1,000,000 km's.  I think me car will die b'fore the pod does.

I got a Simota at AutoBarn for not much more than 50 bucks, including the adpator thing.  Noticeable increase in power on my 2.0, and a great induction noise.  Nice BFYB.  I had a Finer Filter panel filter before the pod, and even that had a noticeable difference over the stock filter.

BTW, apparently Pintara panel filters are the same size, shape, etc. as those for VL Commo's.  So you can get them for a good price, because of the popularity of the VL.

Actually.. I don't like arguing, but I have to argue that fact ssstrx.  Redline.. coming from a reliable source which I'm not going to mention.. is of equal performace to K&N.  I went to buy a K&N filter, and after carefull reading and research I found that the Redline pod will work better as it was designed for Australian conditions.  I mean, there's not much that can stand our extreme weather conditions.  But yea.. Don't get me wrong ssstrx, I'm only basing this on what I've read and heard from part dealers.

You live in Brissy right?  Well, condsider the weather conditions over there, to the weather conditions over here.  It plays a big part.. I mean, you can clearly see it watching the V8's.  Put them on Eastern Creek on a stinking hot day.. and there is total chaos.. or let them run the QLD500 or even Mt. Panorama, and they do great.

But yea.. My choice of air filter would be Redline.

i've read an article about pods. i guess you could say it was a bit of a road test, but on a dyno. and there are better filter out there than both k&n and redline. but i guess the choice is up to you.

however, the worst filter that was tested was the trust airinx filter, but then, even it gave a kw increase on the dyno.

Thanx fellas (and ladies), that's pretty much what I needed to know. I'll probably buy a K&N or a pod (depending on which is cheaper). I'll post here how it goes...  ;D
