6x9 Placement in a u12 Pintara HATCH
« on: Mar 1, 2006, 08:33PM »
Okay, basically i was wondering if it would be safe/practical to mount my 6x9's to the 'cover' of the hatch. It's actually quite hard to explain and i'll get some pictures later 2night.

the cover is really just a thin sheet of what appears to be MDF covered in carpet. The main thing i'm worried about is vibrations and the fact that the boot isn't 'air tight'.

any ideas or comments would be great.  :D

That would involve me having to make some holes in the door trimmings, and the hole in the body of the door isn't big enough...only looked like a 6.5" (from what i could see???).

btw, it's only an Exectutive... so it only came with front stock speakers

put some foam strips on bottom of the cover should stops rattles but not all, or get 6x9 boxs and mount to shelf also but just an idea.

Is it like a parcel shelf?

What thickness is the MDF? If it's less than about 12mm MDF I recommend you make one out of 12mm or 16mm to fit your speakers to. It isn't hard to get a good result.

is this cover you speak of attached to the hatch, so when you open it, it lifts out?? if so do what jono said and make up a mdf panel and mount the speakers on the, and at the same time attach the mdf panel to the tray

the hatch has a flimsy, cardboard like parcel shelf (like any hatch)...
the best thing to do would be to run a cross beam of wood under the shelf then mount your speakers to that...

Make the whole shelf/cover thing out of MDF if you want to mount them in the rear there. Just take the stock one to an audio store and use as a template, but make sure they check dimensions so that the extra thickness of the new shelf/cover doesn't stop the hatch from closing.

Other than that, buy some 6x9 boxes and put them on the shelf. Wouldn't recommend putting speakers in those shelf/covers on hatches, 9 times out of 10, even if it's just a set of 6's, it sounds craphouse :)

If the shelf is stiff enough it sounds great.

7 times out of 10 the shelf is stiff enough...
