A32 maxima interchangeability with U12
« on: Feb 2, 2007, 09:01PM »
I thought i had read somewhere that the A32 (fwd) maxima suspension is interchangeable with the U12.

Can anyone confirm this?

Ah ok. I d/l'd an A32 FSM and the front suspension *looks* the same, but i need to confirm with actual dimensions that the fronts are the same.
Rears i know will not work.

just research part numbers on websites like monroe mate. easy way to figure out if they're the same or not.

No luck unfortunately.

Reason is i'm after a set of D2 coilovers, and they obviously don't have them listed for the U12.
Think i may just have to obtain the critical dimensions and send them to D2 to see if i can mix/match a set.

Yes. We know.  ::)

Why not opt for the S13 C-O's with modified tops ?

I anticpate on doing custom camber mounts for the U12 anyway, i'll have to do some digging on the S13 stuff.

you could always use struts to fit gtir :)

edit- and a32 parts are pretty similar. rear sway bar is the same but thicker, maybe 10mm wider but you just have to use a bit of muscle power to squeeze it inbetween the bottom of the struts. BUT, the aussie spec u12 has different rear sway bar mounts on the bottom of the struts. you will have to change to jap spec struts to fit it, or bolt on jap spec swaybar mounts to the bottom of the struts (its a bolt on) and cut the aus spec sway bar mount off the strut. Its an easy do.

I think the a32 has different top hats on the struts also

Mounts are not a problem fraz, as i said i'm doing U12 camber adj pillow ball mounts.

What about GTiR rears?
I don't care if the strut top plates are wrong, just as long as the rest fits with minimal mods.

The problem with the rears is the strut/hub assembly is one piece. You have to run an insert shock absorber and make new spring mounts. If you have awd the gti-r struts are more of a bolt on.

I have modified some toyota struts once for a kp61 starlet and we machined off the spring platforms, welded a piece of the right diameter thread and used the spring platforms off a set of tein rx7 spring platforms and sat them on the nut. It passed a cert inspection no worries and was pretty cheap.

You could turn up a thread on a lathe and also make the nut. It does not need to be anything fancy or super strong.
