Reconditioning an LSD
« on: Nov 12, 2008, 11:00AM »
Hey all,

recently I've noticed my car hasn't been handling the way it used to. I jacked up the car to put my new wheels on and gave them a turn once they were bolted in place and the wheels turn opposite like the LSD is non-existent. It has worked in the past and on this gearbox.

Can they be rebuilt/reconditioned??

i belive that the oil changes some how and you can replace it, my car is the same, so i got a spare diff to put in it and i am getting it filled with oil, 60 bucks at the diff joint and a new shim put in to make it tighter.

hey that'd be good ... I don't remember a bung or service hole to get to the diff though. does the box have to come out?

Get it welded  :o

I think its in the side of the gearbox? Or is that gearbox oil?

yes it is inside the gearbox you have oil inside the VLSD, the casing has 2 holes in it that are filled with small ball bearings and then "peened" to stop them coming out, there is a shite load of threads on NS.com on how to make a VLSD work better with shimming and so on.

Welded diffs are way too hardcore for street, I personally don't like them at all. In a RWD it goes....understeer...underste er...snap oversteer. Simming might be a good idea as Laurence suggested, guess it depends on what you are after.

I don't want it to be crazy but i want the LSD to do its job when i give it a good thrashing. I do the occasion belt at willowbank raceway, other than that its all street work

WOW $60  to get it good as gold again i was expecting it to be much more expensive! thats great! is that wid the diff and gear box out of the car tho???

i remember reading about the viscous lsd and it was saying that they arent very durable and only last "i think" 50 000 odd miles before they start open wheeling but if its only gonna cost $60 bucks to fix thats doesnt bother me too much

LSD is inside the gearbox; as far as i was aware, the fluid used inside the diff can't be replaced. I'll do some digging around and see what the go is.

If it can be replaced via the peened in bearings, it would be a good idea remove them completely and have the hole threaded to accept a hex head plug which can be loctited in place for future servicing.

This article only applies to RWD VLSD's, unsure if the fwd VLSD uses the same arrangement (can't see why not).

You can't change the viscous liquid in the diff centre unfortunately, you either have to replace the viscous centre entirely (not serviceable) with another viscous centre, or a mechanical centre, or re-shim your old one as per the article.

The U12/U13/GTiR AWD centre VLSD's are similar and are a pain to service.

I could imagine they would but would be so incredibly rare/expensive. Shimming would be the way to go imo.

Vithy are you talking about the AWD U12 centres?

Nismo did make replacement centre diffs for the GTiR, I would imagine they would be similar in the U12/U13's
