CA20E to KA24DE upgrade
« on: Apr 29, 2004, 01:03PM »
Don't know if it's a stupid idea, but since there's no replacement for cubic displacement, is it a major problem to convert to a KA24DE from a FWD TRX into an R31 Pintara?

I know there's differences between CA20's in FWD and RWD, but it's just a thought.

If there's already a link just point me there, I didn't see it.

Thanks!!
I'm so far behind at work, I'm almost retro!

you'd want to get a ka24de from something like a navara as they're already rwd.

in the fwd pintaras, the engine mounts for both the ka24e and the ca20e are exactly the same, so i guess you could assume the case would be the same for the rwd engine, but of course you can never be too sure.

a good thing about the ka24de is that it makes 115kw compared to the 96kw that the ka24e in the trx makes. they're also commonly turbo'd in america with loads of success so if you swapped the engine in there is loads of potential down the track for it.

not sure on price for a ka24de, you'd have to ring around, but if the mounts did match, then i think that it would be the best non turbo option available, other than that the ca18 would be your next best option. then there are the rb series of engines which you can swap in. i think the most difficult to swap in regards to custom work/mounts needing to be made would be the sr20 an fj20.

also remember that it is illegal to install an engine that is older than the car itself, so that might rule out the fj20 all together.

For ease and pirce nothing beats the ca18de. pulls harder than ca20e. Plus there is soo much room for mods on them. The sr conversion would be interesting. dont know of any r31 pinnies wih sr20 engines in them

the 94 model navara  had the ka24e engine which was rated at 91kw

the 1998 navara still had the ka24e but rated at 93kw

the 99 model navara had the ka24de rated at 110kW @ 5600rpm and 208Nm @ 3600rpm

you could always up those power figues with cams and what not. but still pretty decent, shove a turbo on and your laughing :D

ca18de only does 93kW @ 6400rpm  and 156Nm @ 4800rpm a det is about 130kw and whatever torque, but then your insurance goes thru the roof.

yes true but still doesnt mean the pinny gearbox can handle a sr20det for a long time. U can easily get it strengthened though. ive had my gear box strengthened because i blew so many last year. Worth the few extra $$$

They CA20E boxes are built to handle the maxima's vq30de as well as the CA20E in pinny's, so they are reasonably strong.

vg30e and vg20et u11's and u12's had the same box as the ca20
not sure if they came on the vg30de but it will definatley fit
