Title: REAL U13 Fuel Tank Capacity?
Post by: radizm on Apr 1, 2010, 04:00AM
Hey guys

This has been touched on in REALLY old threads and the system recommended I start a new one, so here it is:

I hear all over the place that my '95 U13 Ti supposedly has a 60L fuel tank but when the needle shows 'empty' and I fill up I can only fit about 30L in. This had led me to believe it's not a fuel reserve because that's just a ridiculous main tank:reserve ratio. My needle may be retarded. I'm not sure if the Ti model has a low fuel warning light, if mine's not working or anything about a fuel light as one has never lit up in my car, and I've had it for two years now.

I'd like to know if it is safe for me to run my car completely dry (to see how much it truly does hold) without damaging the engine?

So, a summary of the things I'd like to resolve:

1. 95 U13 Ti fuel tank capacity?
2. 95 U13 Ti low fuel warning light?
3. Safe to run car dry of fuel?

Thanks people!

rad

mate i had this problem with one of my cars it was thefuel sender unit inside the tank, it was faulty, telling me the car was nearly empty but it still had half a tank of fuel.

It's fine to run the car dry. I've done it with quite a few EFI cars with no ill effects.

Please post up your findings!

some poeple say that running it dry picks up whatever sediment is in the bottom on the tank.
Most i got in was 57L as i continue to drive once the fuel light has come on for a while.

I put in 50 litres today and still had quarter of a tank, which was great after doing 540 kms.  But that's another thread.

From memory I've put in almost 60 litres into a HNU13 on the odd occassion.

if you run it dry, and sediment/water may flow, but that's why there's a fuel filter  ::) may need to change it when you run it dry. as far as i know its the cat that becomes damaged but not if you run out a hand full of times , running your car constantly under about a 1/4 tank is supposed to cause the damage.

It'll only burn the cat out if you run it lean or rich for ages.

Take it easy when you run out and it'll be fine. Especially as the car will only run for a few minutes after it starts coughing.

Also you're just as likely to pick up water and sediment with a full tank as this stuff sinks to the bottom of the tank to where the pickup is anyway.
