deck prices. where's the cheapest??
« on: Jun 15, 2003, 11:47PM »
Well i just sold my old deck on ebay for some ridiculus price and i'm in the market for an MP3 deck. I'm particulary after the Pioneer 5550MP, which goes for about $500 here in SA. Are the prices over in the eastern states significantly less then that price? How about online stores that you guys know of?

I'm seriously considering importing this unit from the US for a total price of $340 including express postage, but i'm waiting on a response from the customs office as i dunno if it will attract any import tax or GST.

edit - speeling...

Well for a start you could try all the big names here in Adelaide:

Roccas, Autobahn, Tonkins, that kind of thing. I'd highly recommend Tonkins. They've got the goods. Also, for everyone, never get these people to install your stereo. Do it yourself. Saves money and saves your stereo being subjected to the sh!t jobs these guys do.

yeah i went to Tonkins and Complete car audio, both said $499. I'm off to roccas tomorrow because they're closing down (being replaced by supercheap auto).

If i can get the pioneer for $450 i'd be a very happy chappy. Customs emailed me back today, they reckon 15% import tax PLUS 10% GST. it just isn't worth it. (if only the store in the USA could mark it as a gift, hehe, then no tax would be needed to be paid).

ah well, we'll see.

I'm sure the import tax on a HU couldn't be high enough to make up the difference between $340 and $499. But still, knowing our shoddy government....  But yeah I supppose give Roccas a try. Although they're getting expensive!!

Anyway, your old deck was ace man! I'm gonna keep mine, 52x4 is pretty good for an internal amp and I've got a 222w to back it up. Puts out good sound in the car. No it can't read MP3s (d*mn!!) but it can read CD-TEXT!!   ::)

they are both niiiice!
I'd go the Pioneer, but only cos i like Pioneer  ;)
Although everyone has pioneers in their cars now, so maybe the Alpine would be better for uniqueness  8)

And Rich, i LOVE decks that read cd text.
I make sure every cd i burn now has all the right track names, i love watching them scroll accross my deck. A whole lot fuckin better than "Track 1 - 03:12" or whatever! hehe  ;D

hmm, yeah nice... its got a 1,700 colour screen   :D

but i dunno, 650 bucks... then I wouldn't be able to get the phone i've been hanging for. I think I'll stick around the $450 mark. Shouldn't have spent so much money upgrading my computer ::)

That big photo of the JVC deck, the SX985, thats the same as mine.

Fantastic head unit.  Probably the best thing i've bought so far for my car :)

Cost me $400 almost a year ago.

out of your two choices i'd personally go the pioneer. it just looks a lot smoother.. but then the alpine might have better specs.. i dunno.

well i ended up getting the Alpine on Friday, installed it the same day and am very pleased with it! I spent about 1/2 hr with each deck, and decided against the flimsy buttons of the pioneer, and it also looked a little bland in real life compared to the Alpine. Now to pick what songs i want on mp3 from my 10 gig collection  ::) desicions desicions  ;D
