CV Shaft Inspection - Opinion and Advice
« on: Mar 16, 2013, 05:43PM »
Okay guys

You know I'm working on the U12 currently and making progress. The LCA bushes have now been done on both sides as well as bushes for the sway bar links which I feel pleased about.

When doing my left front LCA I unbolted the CV from the control arm originally and moved the brake disc so I could unbolt and manouvere bits and pieces to get the LCA arms off. Well......................... .......

I started to put back on the LCA  on the passenger side and noticed that the CV shaft had a lot of play. I was like, this is a bit strange because normally the CV shaft is bolted to the hub. So how can it come off. Has it snapped off??

I had my doubts about the shaft snapping off from the hub as the CV shafts have been custom units for the SR20DET swap. However here is an issue I realised.

The guys that did the custom CV shaft, whoever they are I think made it to short. The shaft goes into the spline no problem and I have pushed it in enough till I get no movement. However when I put the shaft in the hub end the universal joint in the coupling comes out. I managed to push it in but I could not go all the way without the shaft being removed from the spindle teeth in the hub.

See the photo's below (hopefully Pedro you can see these). Is the shaft too small or will it be okay??? Don't know what a custom CV shaft costs to make.

See the green line, this is obviously the coupling (this is the correct term for it?) and the shaft joints sticking slightly out.

As the coupling is quite big I would have thought it would sit further in. One of the ball bearings sits inside whilst the other two sit partly outside.

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK :)

It was so and I thought this was the problem so I lowered the car and put the wheel back on then jacked the car slightly up so I could have a look underneath and still the same.  Talked to another mechanic and he reckons I should get a new driveshaft made up that is longer so the bearings actually sit inside the housing and not just rest.

Forgot to mention the passenger side driveshaft is not secured by a nut at the hub however a nut still exists with thread. Inside the hub the driveshaft sits and rest but does not extend to the outside of the hub (facing the tyre/wheel). The conversion otherwise is good but this is pretty poor in my opinion (to make an axle too small).

UPDATE

Okay guys. I took the CV shaft out today and the CV joint is secured properly on the hub however the nut was loose in comparison to what it should have been.

Took it to a CV shaft specialist. He said to measure it which I did and the CV shaft came short by some 2cm + in the housing that is on the shaft to the gearbox. The person(s) that did the CV shaft either got their measurements completely screwed up or rushed the job.

Upon talking to him (the business owner) he pointed out that I shouldn't be able to just seperate the shaft from the spline at the hub as it is held on by a circlip. So I am getting it redone with boots and everything all packaged. $350 estimate but at least it will be done properly and I won't have issues later!

Sounds good mate.

I had similar issues trying to find the right combination length when converted my U12 AWD to a U13 AWD's front viscous differential, shafts were slightly different lengths, etc

Good to hear you got it sorted.
