How well do you know your gearbox?
« on: Jan 18, 2012, 01:30PM »
Quick little quiz for KA24 drivers (no cheating)
I find I dont use my speedo that much anymore, drive off the note of the RPM.

4th gear 60km/h whats the RPM?
5th gear 2700 RPM, what speed?

what speed are you at 6k RPM in...
1st
2nd
3rd
4th
5th

1st - 50
2nd - 105-110
3rd - 130ish
4th - 160
5th tops out at 215ish round 4.8k rpm

4th at 60kmph ... 2k rpm or there abouts.

Can't tell you about RPM versus speed, I'm so awesome I always rev to 6500rpm on every gear change Col :P :)

Ok I didn't actually know the 6k ones, keeping an eye on your speedo at those revs is the last thing on your mind.
I had a go at 3rd gear and I don't recommend anyone try it on an open road or gears beyond that  :-\
Thinking about 5th gear ratio, it would take forever if you actually made it that fast before running out of road or hitting 2.1gigawatt's and dissapearing with flamming tyre tracks.

I pushed my car once just to see the gear speeds. At 220kmph these cars don't seem to vibrate, shake, rattle or anything. Just feels like you're floating. 2am M1 motorway on the way back from the sunshine coast, 50km stretch with smooth road and no speed cameras.

And lots of people die on that road mate.

I was lucky one day coming back from there in the wet, that I didn't ram up someone's ass.

110 KPH zone, in the rain with wipers going (so you only see flashes of what's in front of you), someone in front decides to stop dead, and took me a second to realise what was going on.. I gave myself about 250 metres gap from the SUV in front while I was driving. Hit the brakes just soft enough to not lock them up, but pull up ASAP. Almost shat myself the whole time, because if I locked up it would be all over. Turns out, a milk truck ran off the road, and all the traffic was being backed up.

60 at about 2k rpm in 4th.
100 2.5krpm in 5th
so, close to 110 at 2.7 but I think it's almost 3k for 110.

I havent hit the 7k RPM limit yet (chipped). too scared :(
