« on: Nov 26, 2011, 03:10PM »
Ok so I was driving fine up until a few minutes ago when all of a sudden I couldnt put it in first or second gear, my clutch has been slipping a little bit lately so is this related or is my box farked? Box has never ground and always gone in all gears without any troubles

If your clutch has been slipping, check your hydraulic fluid levels. Can you engage any gears at all? If you throw it in third can you stall? If the clutch is slipping in thirdbut can still select id say renew both. But not being able tochoose first or second is the box. Can you choose a gear while the car is off?

Gears or syncros are gone. Probably gears. While you're getting a new box you may want to consider a new clutch in there anyhow.

Get the box checked. Could be that the selector has moved. I had that happen to me once, was an easy fix and relatively cheap if you take the box out of the car and take it to a mechanics. Most of the cost is in the labour.

My boss is a mech, he seems to think its a combination of my clutch and the excessive play in my stick from rooted bushes causing me to "run out of room" at the top side of the stick or something, I dont know anything about gearboxes or clutches, so it makes it hard to understand

I just checked while the engine was off and second goes in slightly harsher than normal but no first, all fluids are good, pumping clutch pedal while cars running doesnt help

Ok so it turns out I need a new box :( hmmm, the mech and I came to an agreement, 400 labour for everything incl all shifter and linkage bushes, clutch, box in/out, rear main seal, and sump cleaned and resealed, getting another box for 330 :O and all other parts come to about 300, so 1000 to fix her up, hopefully  :D

$330 for a box sounds kinda expensive...

Other than that, that's a very cheap quote. HD clutch while you're there? Chromoly flywheel? :D
