Cheap RCAs
« on: Sep 30, 2005, 12:59AM »
This looks like a pretty good idea, I made up a cable like this for the TV-out of my computer, ran the video signal, and stereo audio through the one cable, and it came out great! No interference at all over about a 6m run.

Dick Smith prices:
Cat-5E cable: $0.99/m
Gold-plated RCA plugs: $2.92ea

For a 5m cable:
$4.95 for cat 5 cable
$11.68 for plugs
Plus another few bucks for heatshrink tubing

~$20 all up for a 5 m cable seems pretty decent considering a good quality RCA cable is $38.48 for 2 metres.

Not a bad idea..

I've got plenty of CAT5E laying around.

I've got heaps of Cat5 too, Rake, but all the stuff I've got is solid core  :'(

Not the best for a car installation where there's lots of vibrations.

With something the size and weight of CAT5, does solid/stranded core really matter with regards to vibration etc?

I think solids a little better for electrical conducivity, whereas stranded is more flexible.

I'm not really sure whether it matters, but I'd rather have the more flexible multi-strand stuff because it's less likely to develop weak points over time. That said, I have been using a solid-core cable to connect my laptop to my home network for a few months now and it hasn't stopped working.
