KA24DE U13 Fuel Economy...
« on: Jun 18, 2008, 11:36PM »
hey all

Looking to upgrade from my daily driver TRX to a U13 SSS 5spd sometime soon...

What kind of highway fuel economy are you guys getting out of your KA24DE powered U13's?  I drive 140km a day, so this is an important factor for me! They apparently pull 6.6 to 100km from the factory on the highway cycle...

Cheers all

PS: If anyone spots or knows of a neat U13 SSS, interstate is fine... drop me a PM or post in this thread :)

Last 2 fills were :
440kms for 43L  and
470kms for 46.8L
Both tanks were premium unleaded, mostly urban driving, light traffic, with a bit of highway (100kph) mixed in.
Also 2 cruises were driving and some spirited driving. Only engine mod is the K&N filter kit.
So you should be able to get 500km+ easy as i didnt have the fuel light come on.
Im close to empty so next week i can let you know how it goes

On suburban 60km/h roads to work, I average about 9+ litre per 100km on my LX, that's unleaded.

The lowest combined cycle I've got out of the car is 7.7 litres/100km (95 octane Caltex), that's with 3 persons in the car, ocassionally air conditioning, cruise control off and 70% km on highway.

With just highway driving, I believe that I can get low 7s on fuel consumption and on my car, I don't really see any difference in fuel consumption with premium or unleaded, more with driving style. :)

Low 7s would be easy for only highway driving. There's a fuel economy thread around here somewhere where a lot of KA24DE owners posted their consumption figures.

My bluebird is surprisingly bad... Probably cos of my driving actually to be honest.
Its probably a pretty equal mix of corner/hills, city heavy traffic and freeway driving and I'd say mine usually sits at around 11-13L/100kms
My car history:
'88 Toyota Camry - Engine Died
'85 Toyota Corona - Engine Died
'82 Nissan Bluebird - Write Off
'88 Toyota Camry (same one as before) - Trans Died
'94 Nissan Bluebird LX - SOLD
'88 Toyota Hilux - Handed over to dad and now residing in Perth
'84 Nissan R30 Skyline - SOLD
'99 Nissan Stagea RS4-S - SOLD

Current rides:
'99 Mazda FD RX7 - Lots of fun, but currently up for sale
'95 Nissan Bluebird LX - Current sedate daily
'85 Suzuki GSXR250 - Motorbikes are fun! :)

Oh so thats what your economy is like when you live life a quarter mile at a time? You should take into consideration that it doesn't matter if you win by half an inch or half a mile, winning is still winning.  :P

On a serious note budgie you know how you were talking about how to make your car more efficient? Did you end up doing any of them?

Weirdly enough, what has been helping hugely is putting my ECU into diagnostic mode once every two weeks or so... my fuel economy starts to degrade.  I put the ECU into diag mode and it comes good!!  Stays good for a while, then goes bad again!

FTW!!  So I just keep putting it into diag mode (always returns 55, nothing wrong code).

Weird!

I've got a 96 U13 LX, auto in excellent mechanical condition with about 150,000kms on the clock.
My car is on a salary sacrifice plan so I get some very accurate figures on the consumption as I have to give an odometer reading each time I fill up. The fuel consumption seems to always stay close to 8L/100km.

My driving consists of a daily commute of about 80kms, with some highway (80km/h) as a part of that, basically always in traffic. Also I make the odd trip up north, about a 700km round trip roughly once a month.
I don't hammer the car but I definitely don't drive like a grandpa either, haha.

Hope that helps   :)

I've had my manual U13 LX for 8 years now and its done 257000kms.
I still get low 9's around town (high 9's if i push it hard) and usually anywhere between 7 and 8 to the hundred on the highway.
It has a finer filter kit and a 2.25" exhaust with high flow cat.....
Cheers, Dan.

I think my best highway figure (basically a run up to Newcastle and back) was 6.2L per 100km.

I usually get 9.5-10L per 100km in city driving, though.

Digging this up guys, will hopefully have a '97 U13 SSS in my driveway soon enough.

I'm hoping for high 6 litres per 100km, we shall see!

IIRC, i was getting around 400-450km from a tank with the sr20 giving it a fair bit of stick.

The KA should be getting quite a bit better then 465km with granny driving.

I've got a new thermostat from bursons, $23... nissan wanted $40 and repco wanted $55!!!

If your temp gauge is not close to the middle, or over 1/3rd almost all the time then its not running at the right temperature, which can affect your fuel economy because the ECU dumps more fuel in.

My fuel light does not work, globe is good, so it must be the sender in the fuel tank. Previous owner ran it till it stopped, light never came on... 647km to the tank (not sure how many litres).  Because we all know km travelled, stated without an idea of how many litres have been consumed is useless.

yes. its not really accurate. its only suppose to come on when there is  15L left i believe. But whenever mine comes on i get 50+kms. so somehow i get really great fuel efficiency when theres no fuel left.

i run a Ka24e wid a z32 afm and stage 3 chip and my car never runs in normal temp range unles its sitting in peak hour traffic since my fans dont work on their own, and i still get pretty good econ figures.....i get about 9lt/100km and get to 1/4 tank left wid 500+km on clock which im most pleased about and thats wid normal driving which is a mix of a fang though the hills a few quick is take offs at the light and ya normal civilised driving....i cruise around in 5th gear on any speed over 60 and change gears when the manual says i should lol

i dunnno y but its just never run at normal temp for as long as i can remember, plus my exhaust system has a fair large dent in it so not like a i have a good exhaust system either. I hope that the fuel econ gets better once new exhaust is put on, and DE head too since i would expect the DE to be more efficient and thus better fuel econ
