Title: What have you spent ?
Post by: Pure_Sincerity on Jan 26, 2013, 12:04PM
What has everyone spent their dosh on for their car and what's the grand total ?

1991 u12 TRX (cost $500 as a piece of shit)

DOHC conversion with itbs, flywheel and stand alone
Coilovers, whiteline sways, braces
Misc, lines, fans, fittings, FPR, catch can.
New wheels, tyres, window tint plus sound system.

Blah blah blah

Rough total would probably be around $5k all up.

what's yours ?

Purchased car for $4,800. In hindsight and seeing other trx's with the same conversion done for the same money from years after I researched a bit more I would have evaluated my options.

T28 Turbo, Aftermarket fuel pump & injectors = $2,300
Cheap (new) CD Player - $120
6x9s = $120
3 inch exhaust parts complete (just need welding) = $1,000
Dynamat = $250
Jaycar matting = $250
Alarm system = $700
2nd hand interior - $350
ECU Tune to be done = $1,000
Various 2nd hand parts = $200

Maybe

Ride is too stiff so probably changing springs and shocks = $1,000 (still not sure when I'll do this)
Air Con = $1,000 (with me doing probably 3/4 of the work).
Repainting front bar same colour white - Currently cream white ($100)

All up cost will be approx = $6,300 approx (EXCLUDING PURCHASE PRICE) and  excluding 'maybe'. And I aint even driving it yet!  :o

on the pintara, i spent an absolute assload. couldn't even tell you what it was because it was so long ago. looking back on it now, i wish i never spent it. all a learning experience though.

on the mini i have spent

alta air cai, msd coil, schrick cam, 15% pulley, 1 step colder irridium plugs - $1100
bypass valve - $160
4-1 stainless headers, metal cat, full 2.5" exhaust with twin mufflers - $1100
2% overdriven crank pulley - $120
bilstein / h&r coilovers - $1700
whiteline swaybars front & rear - $420
precision steering amplifier - $120
solid engine mounts - $300
new lower control arm bushings - $180
ebc dimpled & slotted rotors + bendix ultimate pads - $380

cable for tuning - $60

grand total of $5640 spent in addition to purchase price. i shopped around for a lot of bargains (brakes, swaybars, coilovers) and just really thought out every single thing that i purchased for the car, i didn't just jump out and buy shit like i did on the pintara.

the best part. everything was direct bolt on. not too much dicking around at all. also don't regret a single dollar spent.

Whats been the best mod on your mini ? I just brought my missus a 2003 cooper s it has 15% pulley on it K&N cold air intake and bypass valve and 2.5inch magnaflow cat back.

Also needs Front LCA bushes did you go standard or aftermarket ?

Are the cam and msd coil worth it ? Also can you do tunes for them ?

Any good site for mini's like ANTRX ?
Title: Re: What have you spent ?
Post by: noss on Feb 14, 2013, 08:57PM
i find that all the mini sites are very bitchy. there are a couple of vendors that all they do is try turn everyone against the other vendors. most of the members are pretty clueless as well, i often read things like "oh you can't do that because no one else has done it before" just general stupidity like that. websites to try though would be north american motoring, mini2, and mini underground. i like mini underground the most i think. mini-mods.com.au is an australian site, but the traffic is so low there it is often not even worth going. if you want to buy into some of the vendor bitchiness, revolution mini works has a forum, but you basically can't talk about any product other than an rmw product. i also hate all the advertising mini2 and nam have.

i'm finding its harder to find parts for the older minis (mine is also 2003) as the aftermarket is moving to only supporting the R56 onwards.

LCA bushes, i ordered powerflex and got them in from mini mania in the usa. i couldn't find them anywhere else at the time.

i'm not 100% the msd coil was worth it. i had the cam and pulley installed at the same time and performance wise, they were the best bang for buck out of any of the mods. the 15% pulley takes the mini from 9psi to 15-16psi. at the time i only had the cai and msd coil installed. i had the coilovers already installed at that time as well, but i'm not sure i'd say they were bang for buck. big improvement though. moving to non-run flat tyres seemed to be pretty noticeable as well.

beyond the pulley, from what i've read headwork or an aftermarket supercharger is the next big step if you want lots more power, other than tuning of course. i'm a little skeptical, but i've seen dyno maps for minis with the same/similar mods as mine + a tune pulling 150kw+ on the dyno. american dynos must read high.

learning to tune the mini right now actually. i've made a few changes to my mini already with good results. i'm intending to offer a tune service for minis to help put some money toward my upcoming wedding. i think though the aftermarket for the mini as a whole is dwindling at the moment though, so i've probably learnt too late. i desperately need larger injectors though, which is why i'm learning to tune the mini regardless. save me some money in the long run.

I just spent $650 on another u12  :D

Marto's aha, so has the HD clutch, Stage 2 antrx chip and full 2.25" exhaust. Most of all, it's a KA, not a CA ahaha. Pulls pretty hard, and has way more/better stuff like power windows and shtuuff.

I'm gonna swap over my current parts and then do it up a little.. Thinking the same plan, shave head, bigger cam - I CAN GO FOR THE BILLET 300 DEGREE DURATION. Hit me up with specs? And a cai ahaha. Dual tb's probably :D

Plans have changed ahaha. Sorry bout the bad gramma I had beers lol

I redid my math and the car all up including purchase price is going to cost a total of around $14,000 without rego. This is considering I've been doing all the work myself (around 400 hours labour) and purchasing second hand car parts where available. Check it out:

Pintara                          $4800
Dynamat                          $250
Jaycar                          $210
Clarke Rubber           $120
Reflective Insulation   $50
Alarm Tracker   $400
Alarm    $250
Central Locking and Tweeters   $100
CV Shaft   $350
Turbo and wastegate   $1500
Injectors   $500
Fuel Pump   $250
3 inch Exhaust   $1700
Spare Parts    $400
Interior   $350
Bluebird Seats   $120
Various Materials from Bunnings   $600
Laptop Adaptor - Microtech   $130
TechEdge   $400
Engineering Certificate   $750
Intercooler Piping   $150
Laptop Computer      $120
Fluids to get ready for driving   $300

Total =    13800

Makes you realise that building a car cost time and a lot of money. You only would ever do it once in my opinion.

Pedro, I'm just amazed that when you add all the littel items up how much you can spend. Didn't think that much until the excel spreadsheet was done. That and I reckon Dano spent easily a good $5K - $7K on the car with parts, then all his labour doing the front bar and skirts etc. Means that car has had a good $20K spent with a resale value of $6K haha. I aint selling it though. Will drive it as much as I can.

This will be rough and i wont inc consumables like tires and oil filters.

Got 3 corsair ghias for $150 in various states of repair.

chose the one that run the best and swapped parts between them all (and a few from an XF falcon ute) to get one roadworthy.
Drove it around for a while then the timing chain got really noisy. Got a corsair book which was a waste of cash since when i flipped to the chain bit it just said "this is too advanced and will not be covered in this manual" FFFFF.
Tried to change the chain by looping the new one in and feeding it down but fked it up and gor the same and crank out of sync. smacking the valves on the pistons. (moron) So i pulled the engine out and found the rattling timing chain issue was much worse than i thought. the stationary chain guide had broken off and been consumed by the crank gear. fun.

That rebuild cost me about $800 all up. Replaced a lot of stuff. Tinted the windows <$100 of tint. Painted the roof guards and 1/4's $100
speedo gear $30
Head gasket blew again ~$500

All up it probably owes me about 1600-2000 bucks and lots, lots, LOTS of my time.

1990 u12 trx, 134kms - $1000 at auction
new clutch - $150
trim repairs (vinyl lifting round door trims needing regluing - $200
car alarm - $9 at cash converters (best buy yet!)
around $50 on exhaust tubing
CV joint reco and new boot $90

soon to spend:
$30 on a headlight and $20 on a power steering rod boot,
$50 on paint and bog for some rust I am cleaning out
probably around $60 for sway bar bushes

all up (with consumables) less than $1800 with roadworthy and rego to go.  I am hoping to have on road for less than $2500.  It is my son's car and he is a poor student....

I actually wouldn't mind flicking my BA falcon and driving the TRX.  Old school cool - I can fix it (unlike that new fandangled computer stuff.

I am trying to not get the modding bug (age helps!) but wouldn't mind doing the cam, extractors, a new chip etc.... but think I will keep the car as standard as possible so my son can afford insurance!

Don't tempt me....!

Need to keep the car standard to get insurance.  However, if it were for me....

Out of interest - is it a straight bolt in / out job?  I wouldn't want to have to muck around with welding etc.

Extractors wont affect Insurance as they do not require a MOD plate to fit them. All you have to do is declare them to the insurance company.

You would need to have them fitted by a shop, as the flange may need to be moved,  from memory

Well I think I would win if this was a competition, I have spent waaaaaay more than any of the figures I have seen so far on here, but having said that who else would have their car insured for $25K agreed value from Shannon's full comp, that's close to its new market value.
