Title: 'ECM' and 'BRAKE' lights
Post by: MattJohn on Dec 13, 2011, 06:49PM
Hey,
I have a 91 GLi and the information cluster looks something like this:

['battery']                                                          ['Petrol']
[PARK BRAKE]  ('Fuel') ('Speedo') ('Tempreature')      [BRAKE]
[BEAM]                                                              [ECM]

The [Info] are representing lights and the (Info) represent the dials. (If that wasn't clear).

Just wondering what the BRAKE and ECM lights stood for/ment as they were lighting up here and there latley.

Thanks, Matt

Habib knows... Habib won't tell though.. :P I'm going to send you on a fact finding mission.. Use the search button and report back..P.S, I'll give you a clue.. The ECM has something to do with the computer.. ;)

If those lights are on simultaneously I have heard its a code sent out by the secret british intelligence agency that you have been selected as the driver of a corsair to go on a top secret mission to the himalayas. There you shall find the answers you seek

Ok ok brake means your driving with your handbrake on lol and ecm means something is gone pooof and isnt working how it should be. This message will self destruct..............soon

You have been selected as the driver of a corsair

Troll was a big fat fail.. As its a pintara  :P

Ok ok brake means your driving with your handbrake on lol and ecm means something is gone pooof and isnt working how it should be.

haha nah, the handbrake is definalty off, the handbrake (parkbrake) light is on the left of the cluster and lights up when the handbrakes up.. This brake light is on the right (might be a handbrake light as well? Don't get me wrong, i have no idea) and just says brake.. no 'park'brake or 'hand'brake.

Found this in a simular thread.. Il have a look tomorrow when its sunny again  :D
The brake light means there isn't enough brake fluid in the master cylinder.

For the ECM light, do a diagnostic code check listed in the ES section of the service manual here: http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=7177.0 (http://www.antrx.com/smf/index.php?topic=7177.0)

I would be checking the sensor, ecm problem usually means a sensor or something has carked it, so that would explain both lights, I dunno just my honest opinion

I am not exactly sure what the sensor does or means but I have a few thoughts to throw around first of all the fluid could be kinda old and oxgen, water, steam etc can make its way into the fluid so id say change it and bleed the lines, also inside the master cylinder the "plungery" bit LOL could be worn or damaged allowing fluid back through it or something. If any of that made sense

As has been said, Brake light probably comes on when the level is low, as there is some sort of sensor on the lid.
(However, I've also had it come on when the alternator was dying. I'm not sure how or why, but the mechanic said it happens with this type of car, too low voltage from failing alternator and low battery voltage too sends a false signal about the brakes. Just something to keep in mind)

ECM means a fault has been found in the electronic injection system, and you should check for codes in the ECU.

ECM and BRAKE means your alternator is on its way out.

Brake alone means no fluid.

EMC alone means do a diagnostic and find out why.

from memory "battery" + BRAKE means alternator. not sure about ECM + BRAKE
