CA20E alternator life
« on: Nov 19, 2018, 02:25PM »
Just a small question about how long CA20E alternators last or don't last.
While I was faffing around under the U12 Exec bonnet yesterday it occurred to me that the alternator would be pulling hot air through it which would be largely sourced off the #1 extractor header. This can't be doing the alternator any favours.
With the under-abundance of threads about alternators, I supposed it's not worth making a heat shield for the alternator or thermal wrapping the headers.

I see now why Nissan put the water/oil heat exchanger on the filter hole in the block. The oil would collect quite some heat from the exhaust pipe running right under the sump, particularly in slow traffic. Perhaps heat shields here would be of benefit.
Of course the heat exchanger would be of use in winter as well, helping to bring the oil up to temp quicker since the water system (generally) warms up a lot faster than the oil.
