U12 4 pot caliper Q's + braided brake lines.
« on: Nov 9, 2012, 08:53AM »
For those of you who have 4 pots on their u12, what noticeable differences did you guys find? Apart from mad aesthetics lol. ????

Also requirements ?
- 4 pot calipers.
- 30mm thick rotors turned down to 274mm ?
- custom brake lines with appropriate end fittings.

Now for the braided lines.

HEL performance brake lines in the UK do braided lines for $115 shipped for front and rear on any car. So roughly $60 shipped just for the front. Can I use r32 gtst brake lines ?

Rotor thickness will depend on calipers you get. There are 3 different types. 26mm aluminium, 30mm aluminium and 30mm cast iron (I think the iron are 30mm). There is a good article online that shows the difference.

The rotors are 280mm machined to 274mm. More than likely will need to be redrilled. I bought blanks and had them drilled the same time they were machined.

I just had new soft lines made up, which held up okay ok on the track, however I will be looking at braided lines in the future.

i read someware that the alloy ones dont like heat to much but i dont think it should matter too muvh with open rims, slotted/drilled rotors and decent brake fluid. all of these are usually stock on those who have done the conversion. i got my lines made up from a mobile hose guy, he had a braided option, he said if you have quality hoses you shouldn't need braided unless the car was track specific, our a show car.

I have the 4pot sumitomo r32 gtst calipers, they take a 30mm thick disc. I will only be getting standard rotors, not drilled etc, too pricey right now as these 4 pots would be a substantial upgrade from stock I'd image on such a light car I don't think I will need them. Plus I planned to have one of the mobile clutch and brake service guys come to do mine.... Braided may be the option pending prices etc.

I got the 4000 series which is kangaroo paw, slotted and cross drilled. Bought them blank (see below) and drilled to pintara pcd. My part number was 4909, if your just getting standard rotors they would be 909.

Blank:

Compared to stock:

If your looking at doing track work, spend the money and get the better rotors, slotted at least, if its just a street car then standards should be fine.

I knew I had to re drill blanks or make a 9 hole rotor, preferably re drill blanks. I will need the 280mmx30mm rotors. Some track work will be done in the future so I guess I will go with the skittered etc, probably same as yours, they are sexy, I'll see if my mate can get them cost price through his work, what did you pay kranz ?

Can't remember, I got a good deal though as it was the last run of blanks for a while. I think I managed to pick up the pair for around $400.

great info kranzy, can we sticky that if its not already.
will the j30 hubs fit the standard zx/gtst rotors? even the standard j30 rotors would have to be a bit gigger than the u12 ?

Easiest way to know if rotors will fit is to compare the numbers in the dba catalogue. That's what I did with mine before I bought to make sure they would fit the pintara hubs.

400, is goosd when you consider they great , and its not like you get 6 month out of them, i too have them, also RDA Gold Passivated Turbo Grooved u12 on rear. i have a set of dba std rears if you want them.. if i di them again i would look into the j30 hubs, cause one they there it can be hard to find rims to fit.

I've chosen to go with the custom DIY braided lines.

What size banjo fittings fit the r32 gtst 4 pot calipers ?

Also how long are the brake lines on the u12 ? 1200mm ?

I hope by "DIY" you mean that you are getting someone ELSE to make them up for you.

You CANNOT make your own flexible brake lines unless you have the correct hydraulic crimping machine and tooling to securely crimp the fittings to the hose. Using compression fittings that can be disassembled are NOT ADR compliant and are just plain dangerous for brake systems.

Nearly any brake workshop will have the gear to crimp the fittings to the hose, and can make up ADR approved braided brake lines.

From memory I paid about $100 to have the pair made up for my black U12.

Take the caliper and an old front rubber brake hose with you, and a brake workshop will make them the correct length with the correct fittings.

For your reference, R32 4 piston calipers do not use a banjo fitting, they use a female tube flare and male tube nut (M10 x 1mm) to connect the flexible hose to the caliper. Remind me and i'll take a pic of mine tonight.

Also ensure that the the braided line that is supplied has the extruded rubber / urethane cover over it. Most places typically supply them in clear, so you can still see the braid, the place that did mine had choices of colour tint for the extruded cover, I had mine done in black. You can just see the braid through it.

While you are at it, take your flexible clutch line down and get it made up in the same braided line with fittings to suit.

Sounds as though you have the same calipers as me, 30mm alloy 4 piston. My rotors were also bought as blanks and drilled to 4 x 114.3, I also had the same brake workshop that made my braided lines turn the rotors down from 280mm to 274mm.

When I replace the rotors after the next couple of track days, I'll be going straight to a 300mm rotor from the R32 GTR and machining up an adaptor to move the caliper out from the hub to fit the rotor. I think it will leave me with about 5mm clearance from caliper to wheel with my 15" Weds...IIRC.

yes, DIY as in getting someone else to make them to my specs than I install

yeah i relised this a few days later, they are also known as union fittings, i will use those, they are still on the back on my calipers.

good idea with getting the clutch line braided also, I will be doing that.

A brake workshop will typically make the lines 15-20mm longer than your original rubber lines, just to be on the safe side.

Definitely take in an original rubber line with you if you can, from memory they crimp on the fitting that secures the flexible line to the bracket on the strut...they'll need your old rubber line to get it in the right position.

Forgot to take a photo last night....try and do it this afternoon.

No worries mate, I'll have 6 months to do so, no license :p so I'll take the rotors down to be turned down and re drilled at the same time as getting the lines made up.

My Cost calculations:

R32 gtst 4 pot sumitomo calipers, new seals etc painted blue; $300
Same DBA4909 rotors as kranz at cost price: $130 each- $260
Braided brake lines: $110ish

-$670

It's abit pricey, better be worth it!!!

What are the difference in rotors from DBA to RDA.

For the 4 pot calipers, rotors, pads, machining and brake lines to be made up to suit a u12 is very pricey, INFACT, this total cost falls just $300 shy of ordering a complete 6 pot caliper kit from cartel suited to an s13 Silvia, comes with the 6 pot front calipers, any colour you like, various size floating 2 piece rotors from 280-400mm (price varies) pre drilled to 114.3 being for an s13 so no modding necessary, come with braided brake lines (this part won't fit the u12) comes with brake pads, caliper adaptors and all necessary hardware.

In short, if you got the wheel clearance, and plan to do the upgrade with a few $$$ more to spend, get the 6 pot upgrade from cartel, I'm considering selling my 4 pots to fund this to bolt straight up. Just buy brake lines.

Alternate option is that we could just buy the GKTech caliper adaptors suited to the Silvia's, z32 and r32s to run the 324mm OD Rotors, just shave down that 6mm from the OD and were set.
