Roof lining
« on: Feb 15, 2006, 12:40PM »
I've had enough of this giving me the shits. The roof lining peeled of the roof quite some time ago. I've started driving this car a lot more now, and need to stick it back in place. Does anybody know what glue or adhesive spray needs to be used. Has anyone done the job before.

I have just redone my roof lining...although there was no problems with it i wanted it to look new and clean.

Heres a piccy for you:

I removed the roof lining out of the car and stripped it back to the cardboard base that it is originally before its covered...using quick grip i covered teh cardboard on one end and put some vinyl on that and then slowly moved down to the other end applying the glue and sticking the vinyl down when tacky. Make sure you flatten it out on the other side not to get creases or bubbles. Once that side was dry i turned it over and started folding it over and glueing it the same way. cut the holes out for the various things and got that as the end result which im very happy with so far.

no just take off all the trimmings around the edges and the handles, visors mirror and interior light etc and then it drops down. Taking it out of the car was a bit of a trick where i had to move the seats all the way forward and angle it out of the car through the back door.

Then its just a matter of taking the fabric thats on it off...a little bit timely cause you have to make sure you dont tear off to much of the carboard so no imperfections can be seen.

only prob i have when taking the door plastic trims out is a fear of breaking them.

I tend to pull and nidge with a small screwdriver, but i fear im going to break them.

best is how you describe it just be gentle and dont force and you should be right. As for where to get the fabric from...spotlight is normally your best option unless you want to use carpet.

At work we use a screwdriver-like tool which is basically a shaft with the end bent into a sort of hook, if you're going to be doing alot of work on your interior I recommend buying one of these. They are so much better for your panels than just ripping them off.

I can't find a picture of the tool on the Snap-on website so a crappy ASCII diagram will have to suffice:

Yea, what jono posted is pretty much what you're supposed to use to remove your interior...
Depending on how much its bent, they are called "Hook Tools's" or "Awl Tool's"

you can buy trim removing tools made from plastic so they wont scratch, in a set with several different sizes/shapes from auto shops/trade supply stores.

hey guys, finally worked up the corage to take the roof lining out of the bar today.

Quite easy actually, well piss easy!

but yeah got her all out and is now waiting for some nice felt (black -grey) to go in there!

only prob is that the cardboard has bent / warped due to some water or something getting in there. Not 100% sure how it happened but yeah is there a good way of rectifying the problem or the cardboard being bent?

cheers guys

oh ps may even throw some white vinal in there and then do the door trims white aswell ;) we will see my opinion tomorrow

i cant seem to find any felt that is wide enough to cover in one go.

ie not having to join tow piece together.

where did you gt your felt from?

Felt? or fabric?

Most fabric should be wide enough to do it without a join.

Well im not saying it's a must, it's preferable as it has the foam already stuck to it so u don't need to join the two together to give it a presence look and a soft feeling, you can also get them from spotlight n shit.. but im pretty sure there is no foam backing on it.

you probably wont notice it if the staples are around the edges as theres trimmings there to stop it being visible...only thing you have with doing it that way is it wont contour to the roof properly.

I mentiond that it wont sag in the middle by stappling around the edges.

yeh the middle wont sag because it is stretched out tight, u still hide it in the top covers but when u staple it it stays in the covers and doesnt come out

i realise that it is pulled tight but where the covers are and the top of the roof are at different levels so it will be tight but not in the same shape as the roof was.

My roof lining has come off, and i couldn't be bothered fixing it yet- lazy- so i just put some thumb tacks in. easier than stapling and they probably hold it for longer.
Stand out more i guess
